I think you will find the gold does not develop a film but rather a film
is deposited onto the surface from impurities in the air. That's why
it's so easy to clean off. OTOH once gold contacts start to stick, it's
usually a sign that the contact spot has welded . It can be smoothed
off, but will never be the same unless it's a very small and thin spot.
That gold plating is pretty thin.
