Go look for grid driven, class AB1 amp designs. Any number of tubes from 
2E26, 6146, 4X250, 4-400, 4-1000, on and on will take your 5 watts and 
make 30 or 3000 watts.

The added complexity is the need for  screen and bias power supplies.

There were a few amps made in the 50's, Heath, E.F. Johnson, Central, 
good luck finding any.

Many of last of the big iron transmitters of the day, Viking Valiant, 
Viking 500, Heath Apache had an input circuit to drive the PA stage from 
an outboard 5 watt SSB generator.
