Mercury Vapor tubes produce 120 Hz hash just like florescent lamps (old style).

Might have been thinking about thr radio frequency noise generated by mercury 
vapor
rectifier tubes. Small radio frequency chokes were used in series with the plate
connection to the rectifier tubes. See Radio Handbook, tenth edition, page 331.
