Jim,

Let's assume for a minute that there are only 2 diodes and the 3rd one 
is maybe something like a zener as only 2 diodes are needed for the 
usual limit switch circuitry.  Also I am assuming that the motor is a DC 
motor.  The diodes connected to the limit switches handle the full motor 
current and need to have reverse voltage greater than the DC motor 
supply.  That is it.   Do a search for DC motor limit switch circuit for 
lots of examples.
