I sort of doubt if the 89 and other late Alphas use a Jackson drive.They sacrificed price for quality in several components starting in the 80's.

Odds are its a clone from OEP as are in all other domestic amps.

It sounds like it was a defective drive. These are common Jackson Brothers' drives with two mounting forks. Two tapped/threaded holes on the outer drive are used to mount the dial legends. Changing them is an easy job once you find the drives; I've done it twice on the 86 models.

I wish mine had been that easy. In mine it was the friction of the vernier wheels themselves. I tried flushing out any possible oil or other crud with
solvent, but no luck.
