I thought I would chime in on this one, since I don't think it has been
mentioned.
I woked on an SP-200 receiver that had static noise that turned out to be an arc inside a potted filter choke. It could not be heard or seen, except from the speaker. So it could be internal to your transformer. Since it can be heard, you can remove the tranformer and clip lead it in at a distance.
