I didn't think the tubes were still made. The sockets IIRC are relatively easy to modify. Course, make a mistake and you end up with a "pile" of parts

To me, the tubes are better, or preferable to the  8877/3CX1500.
As you say, instant on and very rugged.

They are not made any longer but there are still NOS and good used floating around. I have 2 tested spares just in case or if I want to convert the 222 MHz 8877 amp.
