There are two kinds of inductance, self inductance and mutual inductance.
Mutual inductance is where an coil induces a voltage into another coil.
Self inductance is where a coil induces a voltage into itself in such a way
that
the voltage opposes the flow of current due to the applied voltage.
The changing current in a coil creates a changing magnetic field that is
proportional
to the number of turns. However, the changing magnetic field induces a voltage
that is also proportional to the number of turns. If you double the number of
turns
you double the changing magnetic file and the self induced voltage in series
with the
coil is then quadrupled. 2x2=4
Thus self inductance is proportional to the square of the number of turns.

#### why does half the turns result in one qtr the uh ? I can see maybe
slightly less than half the original uh..but not a qtr. I have played
around with lots
of coils and also fil chokes..but never tried removing half the turns from a
fil choke.
Did you shift the remaining turns to the center of the rod.....or just leave
them
down at one end ? That will make a difference.
