As far as known, it has never been done before, simply because nobody really
needed it: it was more of a solution waiting for a problem. 
Winding coils on a core was done to reduce size, and concocting some tuning
mechanism would negate that.
If you have the patience and the inclination, you can do it, but definitely
as a linear ASSEMBLY, NOT IN TOROIDAL FORM.

Are there any working examples of amplifiers using Pi-L networks with a
permeability tuned tuning  coil, but also using taps on it? Thanks.
