Any older Amateur Radio Handbook or RCA tube manual will refresh your memory.
If youre on this reflector you should at least have the Handbook.

Is that because a "heater" heats an independent cathode, whereas a
"filament" acts as both the heating element and the cathode simultaneously? I'm not sure I know the definitions correctly (my dad was a EE and I'm sure
told me as a young man - but that was a long time ago and I don't remember
any more).

I'd say you were right first time - 8877 has a heater (to heat up the
cathode), 3-500Z has a filament, like a light bulb.
