Could a GDT (gas discharge tube) be wired in parallel with the C2 load cap
on a GG tube amp....... to protect the C2 load cap? Same deal with the C1
tune cap.
On paper, when the GDT fails...they fail shorted. You can get em in any
break down voltage you want..... up to 8 kv....(which might not be high
enough for some C1 caps, depending on peak V across the C1 tune cap).
Right now, I'm using HB adjustable spark gaps. When they arc, they just
arc, they don't weld shut.
I also use an adjustable spark gap across the 4H @ 3 amp CCS (127 lb) dahl
choke used in the B+ supply. That's part of an experimental C-L-C filter
network. The choke is isolated from ground to increase V stand off. I also
have a Kilovac SPST-NC ceramic vac relay wired across the choke, to turn it
into one big high C filter.
The thought here was, at least for the C2 cap, a GDT might just be easier
to install, either on the output coax connector ( hot to chassis), or
between hot side of C2 cap and chassis. If wired across the output coax
connector, if it failed shorted, you would know about it asap, since your
RX would go dead.
