A new option you can order on some of Tom's antennas is a "Tailgunner"
relay. The relay opens up the reflector at the center increasing your
"backward gain" by about 6-10 dB without affecting your forward gain
or your VSWR that much (not true of all antennas, just those designed
with this option in mind).
The Tailgunner is great for listening or calling "off the back," or
keeping domestic signals off your back in a contest. Seems like a
neat idea.
