ARRL SSB

Subject: ARRL SSB

WB4IUX, Single OP, Assisted/Distracted (Packet/interruptions-honeydoos-etc)

total: 239/150/5/1 = 107K
(239 QSO's, 150 mults, 5 hours of op, 1 radio tiff with xyl)

Observations:

1. HC8A kicked butt. (Gave his call often, too...see #3)
2. op at not-to-be-named Multi station in 3 land gave contesting a terrible
name on 80 SSB by plunking down and apparently calling CQ on QSO
in process...argument started and the contester just kept hitting CQ
button on voice keyer...regardless of who was on frequency first,
the contester didn't give the "contesting cause" any good publicity.
We all lost this battle. Thanks. How hard is it to QSY 3 KHz to keep
from looking like an ass? (I checked -- there were clear frequencies
and the contester could have easily done this.)
3. Some contest expeditioners still think its good practice to repeatedly
ignore "what's your call?" requests when a good run is going...fact is,
if guys are having to ask REPEATEDLY then you're not giving your call
enough and you may be losing QSO's from the casual operator. With
short contest calls, you call say your callsign in less than 1 second
and
make your customers (the stateside stations you want to get in your
log) very happy. To me, you should never go more than 3 QSO's
without giving your call -- that's about 30 seconds in a good run and
not
     too long to wait.
4. Conditions on 10m much better than expected.
5. V7A and K7SS/KH6 (both 5 w) grossly loud on 40 and 20.
6. I miss regular contesting.

73, Tom
