the pileups.
With tons of aluminum pointed directly at NWT hour after hour, is a sweep
certain? VY1CM couldn't resist calling me with just 3 hours left in the
contest. This is the new SS strategy, folks. Don't waste your time blasting
away at the East Coast, they will work you anyway.

This was my most enjoyable CW SS.

Hi all --
Running between 1/2 and 4 watts into dipoles, I'm often S2 to you big
guns that I hear S9. Amazingly, many of you actually hear me(!) but on
many paths copy is only marginal. I'm trying to figure out the best
strategy for completing contest exchanges as quickly and painlessly as
possible. Based on previous qso's and by estimating power ratios and
gains, I have a pretty good idea how I'm how strong you're hearing me.
I'd like opinions on two techniques I've tried when I think copy is poor:
(Suggesting that I give up or add 30 db to my sig are not acceptable
answers.)
1. Conventional wisdom is that you should only repeat information
when asked. I seem to have better results if I routinely repeat things that
I think are likely to be miscopied. For example, this weekend a lot of
people were asking me to repeat my section. They hear a '2' call and the
1st letter of the section of 'E' and assume that I'm ENY -- but when I send
EMA it confuses them. Sending it twice cut down of many of the requests
for fills.
2. When I am asked for fills I never know how many times to repeat
the information. If I send it once or twice more and it's still not copied
it wastes a lot of time and sometimes people give up on me. What I
started doing was to send it continuously until I hear the other station
acknowledge it (remember I can hear them fine).
What do you think?? I'd particularly like to hear from anyone who
worked me under these conditions.

Comments and Observations:
* The Henry 3K-A (whose prior duty was to cause us QRM as a rf plasma
generator for a CO2 laser somewhere in TI) worked great. I don't know
if having 1500 watts out made a noticeable difference in our signal,
but we sure FELT louder than when we used a SB220.
* Our 80m qso total was great (for us). The 64 radials under our elevated (12')
1/4 wave vertical and the Henry seem to have made a difference.
* Lack of noise. QRN seemed to be really low this weekend, especially
on 80 and 40. 40 meters was great, even with the 40m beam's rotor stuck.
* NA v 8.05 did not crash once...not once...no reboots on two computers for a
whole contest was wonderful. I have dreamed of this since CT version 4.
* Getting the sweep at 0707 was another high point...our first time ever to
have
the sweep before the first break. Being called by VY1JA was cool too.
* The "Sunday Heroes" really make this contest. The pins and mugs seem to keep
increasing
activity.
* We made our highest score ever in SS...and a good time was had by all.

Ive always thought the contest is over at 2359.59 Utc....since when is it
cool to try and figure out the call of a station you think you worked
AFTER THE CONTEST!? If someone gives him the right call on Internet, does
that mean I can ask for fills on the partials I copied during the test and
left blanks for?? BTW did anyone get the call of that J????? that I THINK
I WORKED IN THE WW!? or how about that time I heard someone send "23"....
