Agreed... if you own a 486 or fast 386 (or if your log is small)

True, but if you are S&Ping, you want to know if it's a dupe, right? Then
you must hit F8 to Check Partial, thus turning it on again.

TOTALLY WRONG! If you haven't loaded the MASTER.DAT database at CT startup,
it STILL checks your ENTIRE log. As your log gets bigger, the delay between
keystrokes becomes longer and longer and longer and longer.
Another caveat... it even does a Check Partial everytime you hit a key in any
other field, such as check, section, serial number... ARGH!!!

According to Jim AD1C, there is already a switch that you can run when
loading CT (I think it's -K1XM or -XM) but it is broken. Ken K1EA is now
aware of the problem and will be fixing it. (Thank you!!)

I think W2SZ/1 is something of an exception, since it's now so
well known. The common problem today, as I've experienced it,
occurs when someone with a 2-land call operates from one of the
neighboring call areas--say, 1-land (Connecticut in my case).
In a contest, the 2-call station finds someone who's not too
strong and calls that station. The other station responds and,
having heard a 2 in the answering call, turns his/her high-gain,
narrow-beamwidth antenna to someplace in 2-land, where he/she
thinks the signal is coming from. Voila--lost signal!
Now, the 2-call station has to wait for the other station to
realize that the 2-call station peaks up somewhere other than
2-land, so the QSO takes a lot longer to complete (best case), or
is lost completely (worst case). My answer was to sign "portable 1"
in most VHF contests I operated from Connecticut. Like HF,
however, this became less of a problem over time, as more and
more of the regulars realized that I was usually operating in
Connecticut.
Practically speaking, this is more of a problem for people who
operate from call areas that don't border the call area they
lived in when they received their call, because the beam headings
tend to be much different. (A 4-call station in 1-land might have
more trouble with 3-landers turning the antenna 90 degrees or more,
thinking the signal was coming from 4-land.)

I talked to Jay, VY5JA (a.k.a. VY1JA) last night. He will be on this weekend.
As he put it "If you hear a faint station calling, turn your beam toward Yukon".
If it's any consolation, he is very frustrated about the poor condx for the
CW weekend from VY1. He was really trying, and only made 180 QSO's.
