Could this be used as a basis to "level the playing field" ?
He (forget who posted that) mentioned that based on his curve, he
(tongue in cheek) claimed high score in the QRP category. Is there

The east coast doesn't ALWAYS win. In the September VHF contest, K9PW
(Illinois) took advantage of a strong aurora in the closing hours of
the contest to work 25% of his total multipliers. This placed him
first place single op for the nation. First time someone other than an
"east coaster" won the contest.
Another example is the 10 GHz contest a couple of years ago. XE2/N6XQ
worked a couple of QSOs over a path of just shy of 600 miles. Those
two QSOs alone were enough to win the contest, not to mention set a new
North American 10 GHz record.
Also I remember that on RARE occasions 9's and 0's would have better
propagation to Europe on 75/80 meters than the east coast.
If the balance between "hobby" & "competition" is slanted heavily
toward the competitive side, I'd advise changing your operating
conditions or be content with your balance.
Personally, if I have a good time in ANY contest, even if conditions
are poor or equipment breaks, I still consider this "winning". Guess
it's a matter of values. If I ever don't enjoy a "hobby", whatever it
may be, I should find another one.
Now where are my binoculars? The SprINT Bird Watching contest is this
weekend...

Since the "who is Joe Walsh" question seems to continue to pop into our
space-time continuum, there must be a need for further info. In the current
Miller Genuine Draft beer commercial featuring the old time train, the music
is by Joe. It is all instrumental until the end where the line "I know
where you're going" pops out. I saw this either on Monday night football
or during the Broncos recent humiliation. Fortunately I was doing other
things at the time, with the games on in the background, so I didn't waste
my time on either game.
The answer to my question about what and where did Joe send in CW on one of
his albums is, Joe sent "Register and Vote" on the 1972 Barnstorm album
on the 4th cut on Side A--Giant Behemoth--in the dream like passage at
the very end.
BTW Is there a reflector logged onto this reflector. ie Why won't the
messages go away, Trey? The original authors are probably getting
embarrassed by the use of bandwidth, or maybe they are still AMers.

Hi...I believe the CQWW SSB logs were due on December 1...your logs are now
over 1 month late! I also believe that it is unethical to look for assistance
on callsigns if you were in the Single-op category. If you made a mistake on
a call, change it..if you're not sure then you will have to take a chance.
That's the idea behind copying the contest and not taping it!! This is a
measure of operating skill!

The program that handles the subscription requests also has some AI
capability programmed into it, and it considered this to be such an
important thread, that it decided to recycle the messages.

We received the NPRM on vanity call signs late yesterday afternoon.
At the risk of attracting flames from the contest purists in the
group, here's a copy of the W1AW bulletin going out today with some
of the details.

Probably the biggest question I saw bandied about on the reflector--
which requests get preference in the initial stages of implementation--
is not addressed and will have to be resolved in the comment stages.

"Vanity" call signs
The FCC has released its Notice of Proposed Rule Making, in PR Docket
93-305, to permit amateurs to choose a "vanity" call sign. Individuals
as well as trustees of club stations would be eligible to request an
available call sign from the block assigned to their license class or
a lower license class.
A fee would be required. The Communications Act specifies a fee of $7
per year for amateur service vanity call signs, and allows the Commission
to require payment of small fees in advance for a number of years not to
exceed the relevant license term. Fee issues would be resolved under a
separate FCC rule making proceeding, and a vanity call sign system would
not be started until then, the FCC said.
The applicant would provide a list of up to 10 total call signs desired.
The FCC would assign the first available requested call sign from the
applicant's list. If none of the desired call signs was available, the
applicant's current call sign would be reassigned.
Call signs of lapsed or deceased licensees would not be available for
reassignment for two years. A call sign relinquished under the vanity
call sign program would be available for reassignment immediately.
The FCC said that even with its new automated licensing process it did
not expect to be able to offer amateurs on-line access in order to check
for call sign availability, and asked for comments on how such a service
could be provided. The FCC said its eventual goal is to accept license
applications electronically.
The comment deadline for this NPRM is March 7, 1994. Reply comment deadline
is April 7, 1994.
