Low Power: TS830S & 1/4 wave marconi at 4 feet(!) on a small city lot.
20 Qs x 6 states => 240 points.
Not very impressive, but still exciting considering 160 is usually
non-productive for me in most contests. Yes,CQ 160m Phone which was
good for me since a few were willing to spend the time to dig my
exhange out of the noise (QRN).

As probably you know, on the first full weekend of May (7/8) will take
place the ARI INTERNATIONAL DX CONTEST. It's a WORLD-WIDE SSB/CW/RTTY
contest managed by the Italian Radioamateur Association opened to
everyone's participation. The rules have been sent to the most important
magazines and bulletins as well as to all the national Leagues. Next month
I will put a summary of the rules on the Internet CQ CONTEST reflector.
It's a WORLD-WIDE competition but this year we offer FREE of cost a
POCKET CALCULATOR for who logs at least 100 Italian stations (fox DX) or
250 Italian stations (for Europeans).
We offer a MS/DOS software to manage our contest (real time or post
contest logging, prints logs/labels, scoring, PacketCluster capability,
etc). It's FREE of cost and can be received by sending 5 US$ or 10 IRCs to
the ARI contest Manager: Paolo Cortese I2UIY, P.O.Box 14, 27043 Broni (PV),

I just read the message from Paolo, I2UIY, the ARI HF Contest Manager,
stating that a free pocket calculator is available for those who make
a certain number of QSO's in the ARI Contest. If I have ever seen such
bad practice in promoting one's contest, then it is now!!! If the only
thing you can think of to make people participate in your contest is
giving them presents for their efford, then you should consider not to
organize that contest. If the contest is good enough, the participants
will be there, even for fun.....
And then, what do you need this calculator for anyway if you have their
contest logging software available...for checking the output or so???
I'm sorry if I wasted some bandwith whith this flaming, but please
consider the reason to participate in a contest before you send out
your log to get a pocket calculator....

Henri- Please get off your high horse on this one. The ARRL started the
PINS/MUGS program in the U.S. and it significantly improved Sweepstakes
participation. It has been suggested to offer similar incentives to
improve participation of certain sectors in some DX contests. How about
good old trips to Bermuda or Japan for winners of those contests? How
about bottles of California wine for winners of Cal QSO party? While the
calculator gift for participation is a bit misconceived, it at least shows
some incentive to get new hams contesting in a sport that is graying and
diminishing in numbers. If Paolo gets a dozen non-contesters to
participate, and a few of them are bitten with the contesting bug, the
contesting community is better off.
