I had similar low audio problems with the Heil mike and my IC-765. The
VOX was intermittent and the mike gain had to be way up. I solved the
problem by building a one transistor amplifier inside the 8 pin mike
plug. It requires one capacitor, one resistor and one high beta transistor.
Now it acts the same as my old D-104 did.

Incidently, the suggestion of using a 0.01 capacitor will not work with
a low impedance mike because the input resistance of the Icom radios
is 1.5K and the low frequency cut off will be above 10Khz. I would
suggest no less than 1 microfarad.

HEIL HEADSETS with ICOM IC-781s and Yaesu FT-1000s

Gotta get my 2 cents in about Heil headsets and the ICOM IC-781 before Eric,
N7CL, gets everyone confused. Walt, W0CP, is correct about needing a
blocking cap in the Heil, but Eric hasn't understood what is going on, I am
afraid.

BTW I own two IC-781s and two old Heil headsets and two new Heil headsets.

HEIL MICS

The Icom radios have 8 VDC on the mic line for powering the ICOM
electet microphone. When a stock Heil microphone is used this DC bias
shoves the mic element to one end of its range and it is barely able to get
enough audio into the radio to get some modulation. But when the DC is
blocked the microphone is not biased to one end by the DC and has plenty of
audio for normal operation of the radio. THERE IS NO NEED FOR A PREAMP!
A series cap will do the job. Both my 781s require the mic gain
control to be opened only about 25% when used with any of the Heil headsets.

NOTE: The new Heil Prosets have a series cap in the ICOM (blue) adapter
cable, so no need to add one! But if you use an old mic or a new one without
the BLUE cable you will need to add the series cap. The BM-10 mic has
the cap built into the microphone.

Note, I am speaking about 781s, which have plenty of audio gain for the Heil
mic. Some of the lower end ICOM radios don't have as much audio gain and
may need a preamp, and seem to have other problems.

HEIL HEDPHONES

The HEIL headphones are reported to have low audio with some of the FT-1000s.
The original "speaker elements" in the Proset are 32 ohms. Yaesu has
been making changes on the audio board in the FT-1000 from time to time.
Various versions of the FT-1000 have had different values of series resistors
in the headphone leads. As high as 47 ohms in some cases. Recent
versions of the Heil headphones (last few months) have had 16 ohm drivers.
Bob will be bringing out a new driver which will have 8 ohm elements. You'll
just have to be careful with some radios not to blow them up.

BTW Most radios really don't have adequate audio output at low distortion
levels to match their performance in other areas. Look at the specs and
you'll see something like 3 watts at TEN PERCENT DISTORTION. You'd think
these guys could make a decent audio amp since some of them are in the stereo
business.

I hope this clears up some of the confusion.

Can anyone tell me what happened to cs.buffalo.edu? Until yesterday,
I could get into them to get access to hambase for callsign lookup.

Now it prompts me for a login and password????

Any help to gain access would be appreciated.

            Thanks, Evert WA5OJI

I can see it now:
Dateline 1 April 2001
Cal Sekiu, current leader in the Radiosport World Cup, underwent elective
surgery to sever the Corpus Callosum, effectively separating the cognitive
functions of the halves of the brain. "I had to do it to keep up with
Sybil.", he said prior to the operation. "She/He/It can run one rig with
each personality. If you're gonna win in the multi-single-multi class,
you gotta do what it takes." At last report, Cal had recovered nicely but
seemed to be having problems with keeping sequential serial numbers
straight. Ken Wolff has been called from retirement to assist in his
retraining.

A setback occurred when Left-Cal and Right-Cal began calling
on the same frequency and got into a calling war. Luckily, Cal punched
himself out and Ken was able to resolve the problem. Prognosis looks
good, but there is already a petition to create a new whole-brain category
for Sweestakes.

Really Derek? maybe you should switch over to one of the new-fangled
mechanical pencils that you don't have to sharpen ... helps one
from breaking stride while listening to the radio.

Now if I could only figure out how to write and turn the big knob
at the same time ....

I suppose part of the confusion comes from the fact that different contests
have different rules. In the ARRL SS you *are* allowed to transmit a CQ
on two bands at once. In the CQWW DX and the ARRL DX contests, the second
radio is used basically to S&P because the rules sya no more than one
band may be used at a time or something like that. It is dangerous
to make a rule for all contests based on the peculiarities of one
event. I still say leave well enough alone...stifling creativity never
got anyone anywhere!
