Guys,
Regarding the Ft-1000 and Heil Proset audio level problems, It might be
said it's darn hard to please everyone. No intent of flaming was intended.
One can't blame Heil for coming up with a great product that is 99%
compatible or Yaesu for the super Ft-1000 design for which it was intended.
I might point out that the current limiting resistors at the headphone
jack are there for (1) to save your hearing and (2) to protect the audio
amplifiers from a short when partially inserting the plug. They also allow
the use of mono headphone in a jack wired for stereo.
Within the last year we have finally started to see some standards by
manufacturers adopted. These would include and not be limited to the
following:
(1) Standardization of DC Power cables for 12V radios both HF and VHF
(2) Packet radio interface jacks on VHF radios, with nominal standards
of impedance and levels.
Unfortunately, we continue to see meaningless implied statements of 100%
duty cycles on transmitters, various mic input impedances and sensivities,
and headphone outputs with really no spec at all. In this case you have to
try to find a combination that works or add a intermediate audio amp.
Industry attempts to grab a greater share of proprietary markets
recently have backfired in big ways. (True-Blue...Compaq....) The obvious
answer in a world market would be more universal standards adoptation.
In our high tech hobby, many things are geared towards cost and profits.
Having sold and serviced amateur radio equipment for 20 years, I might point
out as an example the following:
Amateurs would be reluctant to pay $5.00
more for a radio that has "N type" connectors even though they are better in
virtually all areas for amateur use. Budget minded hams might be reminded
that the failure of a PL-259 at 1.5KW could cause several hundred dollars
damage to the typical amplifier let alone down time in the heat of the
contest lest one be fortunate enough to have SWR shutdown on the final
amp.....
Improved standards would result in greater markets for those who pride
themselves in building and selling quality products. It would certainly allow
me to do a better job, spending far less time on 50 cent solutions to $3000
problems.

Radio Station "WAR" at Ft. Detrick, MD, will be one of many
U.S. Army Stations participating in the military to amateur
crossband test on Armed Forces Day, May 21, 1994. The test
will commence at 1300Z 21 May and continue until 0200Z 22
May. Some stations may continue to operate until 1300Z, 22
May. WAR frequencies will be 4020 7363 LSB; 14402 20994 USB
and 6998.5 13992.5 CW. No RTTY operation is planned.
Listening frequencies will be announced on the air. Op's
include K8BL, WA8MEM, K8YSE and others. QSL's will be sent
to the Callbook Address of the station worked. If your
address will not be correct in the FCC database as of 1 May
or the 1994 DX Callbook, please send us your correct address
during the QSO or give us a good callbook route of a friend
who will forward your card (preferred).
Last year 10% of our contacts were with Europeans and we will
again look for DX as well as USA. Please announce us on your
packet clusters and BBS's so that those outside the USA who
do not receive May QST before the 21st can be aware of the test.
The Secretary of Defense message will be sent on CW and RTTY and
those who copy it will qualify for a nice certificate. Army
frequencies and times will be:

I'm trying to figure out a good switching arrangement to use one linear
amplifier with either of two rigs. I have drawn a 4PDT relay or switching
arrangement, but it puts the two antenna lines immediately adjacent within a
single relay which I suspect will compromise isolation, and I'm also afraid of
putting the output of the amp into the input of a rig if a single relay fails
to pick for whatever reason.
I have two feedlines up the tower, one for 40 and 15 meters, one for 80, 20,
and 10 meters. Each rig is dedicated to a feedline. I want to use the amp on
my "run" frequency and S&P barefoot.
I know the long-term answer is a second amplifier. But not just yet.
If anyone has any experience or hot ideas, I'd be most grateful. Replies
direct to me rather than to CQ-CONTEST please. I'll summarize if there's any
interest.
