I had posted a few questions recently about where to mount a Mosley PRO 67B
(40-10) multiband antenna on a 120' tower under a 4el. 20 and 2 el. 40 on
top. The suggestions were all very similar,
saying go up 60-75'. I think I'll try 70', since that's convenient as far as
guy wires go, and I know it will be a good height on 20 and 15 from previous
experience. It should also work OK for 40m stateside at that height shouldn't
it?? Thanks to KM9P, N6VB, WB5VZL, K1VR, WB4IUX, N2RM, AA4NU, and especially
WA7BNM for modelling this setup.
The second part of this was a solicitation for your experiences with I.C.E.
filters for filtering AM broadcast crud on the low bands. Lots of positive
response on these, I.C.E. customers seem universally pleased with their
performance. I got responses from guys using the passive bandpass filters as
well as the bandpass preamps that they offer. Thanks to WS7I, N2AA, KI3V,
K8YSE, N6TV and NG0X.
I can share more detailed info. on this if anyone needs it.

If this was such an ethical conundrum, why didn't you just turn the exciter
power level down to where the amp was under 1500 W ??????

Gee, this was the first time anyone has openly admitting to using
high power, don't be too harsh on him. He was an op among many
at someone else's station, and I suppose you do what the boss tells
you to do.
I now freely confess that I drove at 101 mph for a few seconds
in the 70s out in west TX at night. Phew, I feel better now.

Pete, I KNOW you were not pointing a finger at Frank. However, your other
point that when you've bought all the futures in aluminum, you might just
start looking at Eimac stock, was one I missed. You're right about that.
Even a 4CX5000, however, will cost you as much to run as every burner on
your kitchen stove plus your two ovens and both 950 watt microwaves, and
I've laid eyeballs on two of those neat-looking gadgets at DXer's QTHs
(neither was interested in contesting, though).
Interesting thread...never thought I'd see, in print, anybody dare accuse
somebody else of outright cheating as those guys did with WMU yesterday.
And the terms GAS and NITRO, and just two weeks ago, Shack-on-a-Belt...
Wonder what my SB200 would be called? I've already coined
"atom-squishers" to describe we lil dinky antler and

Interesting thread...as W0UN and others point out, there are many, many
dB advantage to be observed in certain unique situations like sloping
foreground, highly conductive ground or big stacks that provide elevation
pattern where the average site might be way off the pace. This is
especially true for propagation modes that require extremely low elevation
angles such as chordal hop and troposcatter. ZS6DN once told me that I was
20 over S9 while Mike K6MYC was S5 (30+ dB from a reliable experimenter); the
next day we were exactly equal over the same chordal-hop long path.
There was a local around here who whipped me bad in every pileup until he
sold his super-power amp, then it was reversed. So you can often tell by
direct comparison or pileup statistics.
Especially for contesting, I agree with K1DG and others who assert "you
haven't won anything if you were running gas", and I would think that those
who do would want to respond to the gentle prodding of their competitors
to "win fairly". It's only a hobby, so I wouldn't make a federal case of it,
but full-power legal finals aren't that big an investment for someone who
has a yard full of aluminum, steel and heliax, so a little encouragement
can go a long way. I for one would be embarrased to have a guest op if
I couldn't give him the keys to the Alpha's.

For 30 meters and up, I think you will find that the MFJ small resonant
loop antenna hard to beat on a performance basis. RF wise, the AEA should
be equivalent but it is harder to tune and much easier to break.
