I didn't mean to imply that Dick cleared it beforehand, the information
I have is that the call was made AFTER the contest.

Hmmm....Would it be easy to have the cluster managers send in a file of all
calls that were connected to the cluster during a contest?
But, I guess this wouldnt help much, since if someone was going to cheat,
they could either connect with a different call or just monitor the traffic
without connecting.
Actually Im not too worried about people who cheat.
If they have to cheat to beat us real unassisted types,
then that says a lot doesn't it.

One cluster I use needs a password to log on, another doesn't. Just as
you could connect with a fake call to cover your own dishonesty, so you
could log on as someone who is really unassisted and discredit them. I
don't know that either happens, but it might be hard to disprove it.
What a wicked world!

Yeah, I was wondering . . . what if I made half my Qs running
one radio and the other half running two. Would that qualify my
entry to be half-asterisked? --John/K2MM

Regarding the ham fest thing:
Why are we coming down so hard on MQH?
I would let the score stand as is, and make the rule more specific.
As a VHF contester out here in the west, its very frustrating knowing theres
about 20,000 contacts out there in range if those guys with their hand helds
would just get off their repeater, or 52 for that matter.
Its very tough getting those hand held guys to go anywhere except to their
favorite repeater. Giving these guys a little exposure to contesting at ham
fests might in the long run improve rates for all. Dont get me wrong though,
the hamfest hams should have been allowed to work anybody that called them
back. And I for one would not want my call on a big sign that says "PLEASE
WORK ME". But I can easily see where others might try it.
BUT IF IT TRUTH BE TOLD: FM contesting stinks big time anyway. Unlike VHF SSB
contacts.
For example a typical 2 mtr FM exchange:
--------------------------------
Contester:
CQ CONTEST, CQ THE ARRL VHF CONTEST, THIS IS K6xxx, K6xxx LOOKING FOR ANY
CONTACT. YOU DONT HAVE TO BE IN THE CONTEST TO WORK ME. K6xxx QRZ.
hand held guy:
Ahhh K6xxx, K6xxx, this is (for example only) WD6DBT. (No phonetics)
Contester:
WD6EEE, THANKS FOR THE CALL. UR 59 in CM97. GO AHEAD.
Hand held guy:
Oh ok. Gee I didnt realize there was a contest on, I was just.... (1 min
narrative of the morning activities) ....and just turned this thing on and
there you were....name here is .....and ahh youre full quieting in Livermore.
K6 oh now what was your call, didnt write it down.......go ahead from WD6DBT.
CONTESTER: OK THANKS CALL HERE WAS K6xxx. BUT IM NOT SURE OF YOURS, CAN YOU
USE PHONETICS?
Hand held guy: Sure, call here is Whiskey Delta 6 D-B-T.
CONTESTER: OK WD6DDE. STILL NOT SURE OF YOUR CALL, AND I NEED YOUR GRID
SQUARE.
Hand held guy: We are in Livermore. Not sure what grid square that is. Hope
that helps you out. Call here is W-D-6-D-B-T, D-B-T, Dango, Bango, Tango, go
ahead.
CONTESTER: WD6DBT, QSL YOUR GRID AS CM97. 73'S AND THANKS FOR THE CONTACT.
QRZ CONTEST, K6xxx.
------------------------------------
Now after 900 contacts like that, somebody deserves an award, dont you think?
