My view is that if you are going to publish a list of entries so that we
can check if our log went astray in the post, it must be ALL entries. This
means leaving a reasonable length of time after the deadline (which is
usually a date by which the entries must be postmarked).
If I have spent a long time persuading a new contester to have a go in,
say, CQ WW and he puts in 20 hours and works a hundred countries, has a
lot of fun and sends in his log, he's going to look forward to seeing his
score in the results listing and comparing it with others in Europe. For
his log to go astray in the mail is going to be just as much of a downer
as one of the 20, 50, (pick a number) high claimed entries going missing.

Boy, am I upset with America On Line. It's been ages since I had to buy any
floppies but now I might have to start. They've been sending me free ones
every time I turn around but now they've really goofed up. Used to be I'd
just delete everything, remove the label, stick on a new one and go.
Yesterday, however, one arrived with my BYTE magazine with a label that
WOULDN'T COME OFF!! Treachery!! How is a fellow supposed to submit his
contest logs and stuff like that??? Yes, yes, I could just slap a new label
on top of the old one, but how tacky!! I'm used to running a high-class
operation here - none of that cheesy kind of stuff for me. Well, I suppose
all good things must come to an end. I'll just have to face up to it and do
what has to be done.....
Where does one buy floppies, anyway? Anyone know how much they cost? :-)

Hi guys. I have been selected to make a presentation to the
Raleigh Amateur Radio Society in their June meeting on contesting.
This is primarily to be aimed at the non-contester, and is intended
to be a primer for field day.
Part of the presentation will be an actual demonstration on
contesting techniques. We will have a fellow in front of the
logging computer with the screen projected to the big screen, and
as he sits there running stations, from time to time he will
get one of those Qs we all dread. The kind you spend 3 mins
on and never do get in the log.
This is a chance to help new contesters learn what to do and
what NOT to do in a contest. Please Email me with the brief tale
of your most difficult, or aggrivating Q. If you have heard an
unusual technique that seemed to work well, tell me about that too.
This is your chance to exert your influence on the new chaps.

I concur. Why not post them a short but predictable number of days
before the final text goes to be printed, giving people at least the
opportunity to say, "Hey, what happened to me?" I'm very sensitive to
the implications for make-up of the book (QST), but the sort of
fine-print, one line in, one line out changes that would be involved
don't seem like show-stoppers to me.

Subject: Pre-publication checking
If current production schedules are anything like what they were
when I did the contest writeups, there is virtually no time to allow
outsiders to look at the results to determine whether someone is missing.
If an outside review is deemed desirable, it may mean pushing the publication
date back a month. We need to think about whether publishing a more
"accurate" writeup is worth pushing back the release of the results.
Another idea which may deserve some merit is having the League and
CQ put a list of logs received on their BBS or Internet so anyone could
see whether their log made it ok. Might be a good way to get a master list
to check against the final writeup.
