Just FTP'ed RUFZ about 1 hour ago and i'm already addicted. My cw
speed is a bit rusty (too much time on digital modes i guess). Would
like to hear from others about your scores for this CONTEST simulator.
My best in 5 attempts is: 17693 points, max= 297. If anyone knows how to
increase the volume on the computer speaker i would like to know about
it. K1AR may turn 40 in 5 days but I'll be 50 in 8 days and need that extra
volume. :-) I guess listening to cw for all these years has affected my
hearing over time.

OK I got a grand idea today. Really! Everyone is hot and gritzy and has
the need to see the ol 3-500s glowing away in the moonlight. So what say
"we" the serrious contesters who read this list do a little unexpected
contesting?
Lets take and do a contest big time! I propose the NJ QSO party. It's
in a few weeks enough time to get ready and lets face it NJ could really
stand being taken serriously for a whole weekend.
So who's in? Lets fire up the garden state with enough RF to make her
glow for some time to come.

Hi all,
Last week I put out a query on what people thought of the
1000D. Was it all it said to be and what about the new Icom
775? I received 12 replys and here is a short summary. (Name
and call unlisted since some asked for that.)
1. Yes, 1000D is all it is cracked up to be! Suggested getting
two Icom 765's for two radio contesting since they are cheaper.
(Heard this several times but, one radio is all I can handle!)
This individual did go on to say if they had meaga bucks they
would have two 1000D's for two radio contesting! Said the audio
peak filter for CW was worth it just in itself.
2. Another resounding yes for the 1000D. Did say that Kenwood is
coming out with two new rigs that were supposed to blow the 775
out of the water. (New Kenwoods are 870 & 970.)
3. Another said keep the Yaesu 990 and buy a Drake R4C for a second
receiver, it's cheaper. (But, I want to be able to instantly transmit
on that second radio in a contest, not just listen.)
4. 1000D is the most flexible radio produced now.
5. 1000D has a better receiver and filters than 990.
6. A vote for the Omni V.
7. Icom 775 beat the receiver on a Icom 781 with external DSP.
8. In 38 years of Hamming never been more pleased with a rig than the
1000D.
9. Buy the 1000D and sell the 990 but, keep those funds in reserve for
baby sitting during contests if we have a kid!
10.From a person doing contest results the 1000D is the most used rig
in the contests from the big guns.
11.Dual receive is a dream.
12.Get the 1000D, you won't be disappointed. Don't take a chance on a
a untested rig yet. (Icom 775)
As you can see, most said to get the 1000D since they loved it. So,
after working up a speech and a list of reasons why I need (need?)
a Yaesu 1000D the wife said buy it! I did buy one but, it was used
at the best price I have ever seen. Even had the subreceiver filter.
In just two days time I can tell I did the right thing. It has a
receiver that is quieter than the 990 and the dual receive is great!
Sure beats hitting the A/B button!
The only thing I don't like is that the tuning rate is 10 Khz per
revolution. Called Yaesu today and the tech gave me the number for
International Radio and Computer that is supposed to have a tuning
rate kit that lowers the tuning rate all the way to 2.5 Khz per
revolution. Unfortunatly the number has been disconnected. Anyone
out there know anything about this? Can you give me their number if
they or anyone else has this?
Second question. Heard from a local who said the 1000D has a problem
where something in the receiver will pop if too much static builds
up on the antenna. What? Never heard this one before. I have the ICE
lighting filters on all the antennas which is supposed to bleed static
off of the coax shield. Not too worried about this but, anyone ever
have this problem?

On the RUFZ topic, I ftp'ed it too (thanx Jack) and yeah, it sure is fun!
I dunno my score, it's at the office. Only played 2 rounds so far. Like
W2UP sez it's tough to pick out the dits at high speed, I kept getting
B/D and U/V mixed up. I am embarassed to say I botched 4U1UN as VU1UN.
Anyone collecting scores? I'll volunteer if not. I can keep everyone's
best scores on the Web and maybe post list here if that's cool. It could
be sort of like a CONTEST.

BTW, Brian, I would recommend NOT using the LPT port for band control if
you have a banddata output from your radio. Why? Because it's a real pain
when you want to do some casual operation. If you link it to the radio instead,
it will always work automatically whether using CT or not. So, use CT or
whatever with a radio interface to switch the radio, which will then switch
the band decoder, etc....MUCH more practical!
