The real reasons I picked K1GQ
(1) Nobody else would pick "GQ"
(2) I loved the sound of ZL3GQ (still do)
(3) Dots at the end of a call get lost -- I was KH6GNE before KH6GPQ.
I'll be keeping it, since I never use it anyway.

I apologize that I made the decision to use my own call at the last minute
and did not inform you of this until Sunday evening (I was in the
contest!). We had several discussions leading up to the above message you
sent to me. If you were planning to operate the contest, you should have
just said no to my request. It would have been no big deal as I had several
alternatives.
Actually, my wife had been asking me about the ethics of "borrowing" a
call for a contest. She didn't think it sounded right (and she is not a
ham!). So I think one of the reasons she even let me continue the
contest was because I was using my own call.
In any event, you (and others) who decide to let someone borrow your call
should be aware of what could happen. It could be used illegally. It
could be used in a lid-like fashion. Or it could be not used at all. If
you think you will operate yourself, don't make a committment for someone
else to use your call. Seems like common sense.
I am not sure what "benefits" you expected to derive from having your call
active for the contest. There were no guarantees of length of the
operation (I could have gotten sick or had equipment failure) or the
outcome (anyone could have won). I had agreed only to give you a copy
of the logs, to do the QSL card labels, and to give you a copy of any
certificates/trophys that may result.
I would have preferred to have this discussion privately, but you chose to
take it to the 'net. Before it gets a life of its own, I wanted to
provide my side of the story. What I wrote in my review of my operation
is an accurate depiction of how I made the decision of what call to use.
My only regret is that I did not call you or send an e-mail on Friday
afternoon so you could have had some warning.

That wasn't the question. I do the above all the time, operating from
our campus club station using my call. In fact, it's the only operating
I do.
The original poster said that it was OK to use someone else's call from
your own station, which would imply that I can sit in a pile-up and work
a DX station with several different calls in a row if my friends have
asked me to do it. Well, I don't have such friends and have never
done it, but I didn't think it was legal.
Many CONTESTS have in the rules that the operators in a multi-op
contest do not work stations under their own callsigns, once they
have operated under the multi-op callsign.
Sorry, I should have worked the c-word into the posting, I forget which
reflector I was replying to... But is it OK to break contest rules if
you are not intending to send in a log? Can I use my own call and the
club call on the same person? And then the calls of some friends...?

BTW, I agree with John. After the intial headaches, part swaps, assembly
nightmares... Mine has worked flawlessly since instillation (just under a
year).
