Well, we seem to have slipped from the "magic" into another
discussion of whether or not no-code ops can ever be "real" hams, or
even "good" hams. As much as I love CW (I operate CW about 65-70% of
the time), I really can't see what CW has to do with being a good ham
operator. It seems to me that John Warren (NT5C) is certainly on the
right track .... introducing some new ops to DXing. Who knows, maybe
one or all three will later find that there really is some virtue in
the code. But, whether they do or don't, with a mentor like John
they will become good ops. Isn't this what we really need? People
who like to operate and take pride in their accomplishments, whether
they be CW folks, DXers, or VHFers?

W0UN (W0UA op) 40M CQWW CW effort ---- dedicated to my Mother.
My Mother helped me put up my first 40 meter antenna (a horizontal Vee
dipole about 15 ft up) when I was 14 years old and my HF experience began on
40 meters. I have always loved the band. And she was always supportive of
my science and radio activities both while I was a teenager and later when I
should have been too old to have this much fun. Therefore this contest
effort was dedicated to her memory. She passed away in Kansas City, after a
long illness, a week before the contest. Fortunately I was able to spend
the last few days with her and she died with my father holding her hand and
while one of my sisters and I were with her.
I wasn't sure I would be able to get the pieces of the antenna that had
fallen off a few weeks before the contest replaced in time but the weather
gods smiled and I got the phasing line on one of the KLMs replaced a few
hours before the start of the test. And then I only had to resolve a few
computer/radio issues, but this year I had everything working with more than
a half hour to spare! So with 30 minutes extra I dug out an old AT&T 6300
and got geoclock running. I just wouldn't know what to do if I wasn't
frantic right up to the last minute--something I learned from K0RF!
40M was a very exciting band, but not without its problems from here. No
long path at all and a dearth of southern hemisphere signals. But the polar
stuff made for a very exciting time. George couldn't touch the Pacific and
Asia in the late morning (their night time, running Europe time), although
they were still strong here, but could run Europe (well, walk Europe--the
best it gets from "out here") not long after local noon. After all of the
times of being CQed in the face by the Italians in the mid afternoon it was
certainly a pleasure to see George get lots of responses. Bottom line -- a
great weekend and I just hope I am ready with bigger hardware the next time
propagation is this good.

George, W0UA, asked me to add his comments to my posting and they are
quoted as follows:
1. "Polar band" the entire period--no morning long-path but short-path EU
still around at 15Z
2. nearly round-the-clock short path to EU and even Mideast--best and
earliest EU ever heard on 40M
3. wish I could blame the W0UN antenna system for missing SU2MT--but have
to blame the op--never heard a single VU or anything from zone 12
4. John's "little stack" really worked--as usual, a pure pleasure to
operate from this great station. . .
Thanks to all of the DX and the propagation gods who brought some happiness

Wow, even SKILLED CW ops have trouble ??? The only people who have
trouble with WH6X/6Y5 are not SKILLED OPS, but people who find out that
when they get in CQWW CW and cannot keep up, they need to IMPROVE their
SKILLS !!!!!!!!!!
