I've wondered what I was missing on this subject. What little
operating I've done in the "Lower-48" gave the impression
that most guys couldn't take advantage of standard front ends
due to the amount of man made noise. What good is a receiver
that has a noise floor of -140 dBm when you have a half
microvolt of garbage from 2-30 mHz?

In phone tests this often works. When they have finished their exchange and
before station 2 has had a chance to move off, quickly dump in "KD1NG up 5
please". Then go up 5, hope there's room, and call KD1NG. The problem, of
course, is if there's too big a crowd already up 5. Move up just a little
more than 5 and call there.

What's the best operating procedure for the following scenerio? I am
basically thinking in terms of Sweepstakes, but this could apply to many
contests:
Station 1 has mega-watts and is running stations on "his" frequency. I am
listening and hear Station 2 work Station 1. I need the Station 2
multiplier. What's the best way to work Station 2?
I usually wait for Stations 1 and 2 to finish, then call Station 2 a little
off frequency -- in the "direction" he is moving, if I know. Sometimes it
works; sometimes it doesn't. Is there a better way?

This scenario happens all the time, especailly for the S&P guys and what
I find happening is most ops tail-end the QSO by saying "_____ up 5" The
only problem with that is if the frequency is in use, you gotta go even
higher (or lower) and hope the staion finds you--and usually he does, but
this method can anger alot of other ops who are on/near those
frequencies, but this is nothing new to contesting ;-)
One way is to quickly find a somewhat clear freq. nearby and ask the mult
to move to it, (providing he is still there) if that does'nt work, I just
hope I'll run across him later. IMO it's not worth stepping on stations
for my benefit, but some ops don't share this scheme... It really bugs
me to hear alot of negativity during a contest, but there always will be.
See you in SSB Sprint on Saturday!
