Great time!! Good condx, good activity!
First time in years as single-op, high power for me and I guess
now I know what I've been missing. 40 was the energizer band -
it kept going and going and going.... Probably over half the 20M
Qs were S&P via the 2nd radio. Never could get any decent kind
of run going there. 15 was only good for a few 6s/7s and KP2.
But then KP2BH called in on 40 Sunday night anyway.
Missed VE8 (but worked VY1 - see below) Found VY1JA on 14.002
Sunday afternoon. This was especially gratifying since I had
just spent the previous 30 minutes watching the Packers being
taken apart by the Vikings. :-( (Yes, I worked Jay right after
an off-time - on the 2nd radio...)

** Sidebar **: I've seen a lot of guys saying how they missed
VE8. It reminds me of something VY1CW wrote in the NCJ back in
the early 80s. In that letter he said how he would tune past
the people pleading for VE8 because he was not a VE8 - he was
a VY1! Picky? Yes. But maybe something to think about for SSB.
(I usually just call CQ SS cuz I want others to call too, even
if I am looking for a VE8/VY1.)

As I understand it, the TS-870 has a 3 KHz crystal/ceramic filter ahead
of the 16 bit A/D converter, and relies entirely on the DSP for the
narrower bandwidths. That means that the strongest and the weakest
signal within the 3 kHz passband have to fall within the 16 bit range. If
one allows 4 bits for the weakest signal (pretty poor audio), that range
is 72 dB. My guess is there are lots of times in SS when there are signals
within 3 kHz of each other exceeding that range. One of two things can
happen: The AGC can keep the stronger one from exceeding the A/D range,
in which case the weaker one is lost. Otherwise, the stronger signal
will overflow the A/D, with really ugly results. It doesn't matter how
good the DSP algorithm is in either case, since the data coming out of the
A/D is garbage.
A pair of decent CW crystal filters in two different IF's can achieve
much greater close-in dynamic range. So, while IF DSP may be very useful,
it's not a substitute for good crystal filters. At least not until
someone figures out how to make a fast, cheap 22 bit A/D converter.

Biggest Thrill - VY1JA calls me for the SWEEP on Sunday afternoon as
20 M was closing fast. I had actually tuned away from my CQ'ing
frequency just as Jay called me. (I was leaving to try to find a
VY1/VE8.) Fortunately, as I was tuning away, I heard
"V....Y..........". I quickly punched in the memorized run frequency
on the other VFO and worked VY1JA for the Sweep!
2nd Biggest Thrill - Hunting for a VI on 15M early Sunday morning
and finding KP2N begging for Q's!!!!!! No pile-up; worked him on the
first call! I got a low number from him and felt goooooooood! 15M
was pukey here.
Biggest Disappointment - 80 Meter wire in the back yard of my city
lot is broken. RF everywhere but in the ether! I guess you have to
periodically maintain those tree mounted wire antennas!!!
Ransom Notes - Worked MB, MAR, and WY in the first 10 minutes....
wow! Thanks to VE4VV, VE9HF, and Walt, W7SE! 40 M was fantastic!
Thanks to the "casual" op.... many, many stations with low serial
numbers that just kept calling in on Sunday afternoon!

Well I dunno about an FT1000 but I will show you where the mount for the Ten
Tec Scout is! And the Scout much to it's dismay HAS been used here as a
contest rig.
The thing of this is that there are quite a few younger guys into contesting
right here in the FRC we have N2MZH (30 maybe) AA3JA (27 or so) Myself (36)
WU3M (18)
I don't think the REALLY young guys will get into it unless we do the
following things:
1 Keep a spare rig around an old Halicrafters or other $100 - $200 rig to
loan to the new fellows who cannot afford an HF rig right off. No
microphone just the key. K3ANS did this for me and it lured me away from
the Handie Talkie right away!
2 Invite these fellows over durring a contest. Let em operate if they want
to or not just watch the fun. Let them see what it is low impact buy em a
sandwich and a beer you know.
3 Offer to drive them to a hamfest and just talk about what all that "stuff"
they are seeing is chalange the imagination.
4 Get your local club to get involved with the local QSO party or the ilk.
I got bit with this whole thing through the PA QSO party. This year (3years
later) looks like we may have WON the PA QSO party. But I did it origially
to help my friends in the local club.
5 Invite these new guys to your meeting A's and meeting B's let them hear
about the cool stuff you are doing.
6 Invite them over to use that super station you got to work a rare
DXpedition that you know they will never in a million years get with that
wheezing old tube rig and a G5RV.
These were the things that got me in and I am a lovin it. I do not have a
Howitzer class nor would I call this station a little pistol anymore. Hmmm
maybe a .38 special?
