Being a RTTY novice, I have two questions for you digital guru types out
there:
1. I have a PK232 that I've done a little casual RTTY with. Is this TU even
in the ballpark to be competitive during contest QRM and weak signals (I have
good filters in my radios, but no DSP)? What do most of the really
competitive stations use in contests?
2. Is there still a low power multi -single category in the ARRL RTTY Roundup
in January? The way the "rules" were written, it didn't specifically mention
a low power MS, just a general MS category.

Subject: Antenna Height Compromise

To those of you addressing antenna height restrictions,
John, ON4UN and others are concerned about restrictions vs.
the height of antenna towers across Europe and here in the US.
For the less than multi-tower contest stations, and perhaps
even for them if the towers are only used a few weekends per
year, perhaps the compromise I worked out here on Kauai
might work.
In gerneral, a permit for any structure issued here says that the
height cannot exceed the height of an average palm tree, this
originated decades ago as hotels began to be built here. Tho
about 15 years ago, a very agressive developer was able to
push through a 12 story hotel at one of the beachs near
Nawiliwili harbor. Also the palm tree height got defined as
being 30 feet at that time. So now zoning variance and use
permits both are required for any permanent structure to
exceed that height.
After public hearings, neighbor complaints, PRB-1 arguments
with the island Distrct Attorney's office, etc, and much info and
help from ARRL supplied documents and a volunteer ARRL
attorney from Maui, a compromise was reached and is
working very well, at least for my modest station situation.
My permit also seems to be satisfactory to the neighbors who
only occasionally (as on a contest weekend) must be
bothered by the sight of my antenna high in the air!
I offored to only have the supporting structure above 30 feet
height a limited amount of time during sun-up hours per
week. Specifically, no more than 25 hours any week between
sunrise and 9AM and between 3PM and sunset including
weekends; and never above 30 feet, 9AM to 3PM. This offer
was possible as my tower is a US Tower telescoping affair
witrh a motor used for raising and lowering the structure.
US Tower sells these ready to raise well over 100 feet high.
To 100 feet or a bit more, these can be trailer mounted,
which, as a last resort, could be used in my situation, as
such, by definition, would not be a permanint structure on
my property. These are free standing, and require no
guys.
After a couple of years operating under the granted variance
and zoning documents, my antenna sits most of the time at
45 feet high, or so. The neighbors have gotten so used to
seeing it up and down at various times, they have lost all track
of the 25 hour bit, and now they don't even seem to see it any
more. None of them have any idea whether the antenna is
at 30 or 45 feet, nor do they seem to care. They show no
interest about the occasional weekend when it may be higher
than even that. The antenna itself seems to have become a
non-issue in the neighborhood, and the County will never
think about it again until somebody starts complaining; I
have dealt apparently satisfactorily with all RFI and TVI
issues that have come along.
So, try a variable height compromise. It might work, and
then you will have better operating conditions at the times
you would really like to have them. And of course when the
solar flux comes back up, I can have the antenna as high as
it will go thru the night while 10, 15 and 20 are open all night!
For now, inverted-Vees work great on the low bands at night.

Will, to date I have used a KAM (about equivalent to PK232 for RTTY) with
a FT-1000. I have won a few contests over the years with it. I am
thinking about getting a HAL P38, which from reports I've heard, is
better. Haven't decided yet...

Dunno. IMO, ARRL RTTY Roundup sucks, from an East Coast perspective.

Perhaps I haven't played in the 10 meter contest enough, but I would have
to say that this one was probably a good primer for vhf contesting. I
have certainly experienced meteor pings before, but never was in a
position to use them for communication enhancement. It didn't take
long to realize that short calls, abbreviated exchanges, and high speed
on cw were in order. I did make several q's that I wasn't sure of.
Fortunately in a number of cases there were followup meteor bursts, and a
quick K7SV? was enough to verify a good Q, even if the burst was an hour
later. Can anyone tell me of a good primer on vhf contesting? Perhaps
someone could provide the necessary hints here on the reflector before
the 10 meteor contest next year????
My propagation to you Terry for the WV mult wasn't by burst, but it sure
took a lot of calling and antenna twists to get your attention!

This is the final posting. It has been great doing the scores and look
forward to doing them for ARRL DX. Please remember one thing when sending
me scores and that is to spell your class entirely. I mean single/op/hp is
fine but did you use packet. If you do not mind put your scores at the very
top of your email and then your comments. As many as I am doing I just do
not have to time to dig them all out. Just some thoughts to hope the next
ones will even be better.
Remember these scores are yours. If they do not look right then it is
the person who sent them. I change nothing that is sent to me. All
scores are put in the CLASS THAT THE OPERATOR SUBMITS. If no power is
given then you are put in the HP class.
REMEMBER THESE ARE NOT OFFICAL RESULTS! THIS IS NOT WHERE YOU SEND
YOUR LOGS! Just do not want anyone to be confused.
You might want to double check some of the scores on here and the
breakdown sheet. People are starting to send me their updated logs
and I am changing them.
I hope everyone understands that the top three classes are All Band.

NO! Please DON'T do that! You are training him and all of his friends and
acquaintances that hams are OBLIGATED to do that for them too.

Exactly. So why would you do it? If his cordless phone is like all others
I have seen, it is stamped right into the plastic case that his phone has to
endure all of the interference it gets. If we don't, as a group, stick
firmly to that, we will all have to do as you have done and buy phones for
our neighbors. Think of the poor ham that lives in an apartment complex
with 100 close neighbors . . . all with cordless phones.

There are ways to filter fence chargers. Somebody on this reflector will

NINTH INTERNET CW SPRINT CONTEST
Contest period: 02:00:00Z to 04:00:00Z on Thursday December 28th UTC. This
is Wednesday evening in the USA.
Bands: 80 and 40 meters only (this is a real radio contest, no internet).
Suggested frequencies are 3530-3550 and 7030-7050.
Max power output: 150 watts at transmitter output connector.
Exchange: Consecutive QSO number (starting with one), name and state
or province or DXCC country (if outside W/VE). The name for
the first QSO is your name. For every QSO afterwards, the name
you send is the name you received in the previous QSO.
Call: CQ INT
The standard sprint QSY rule must be followed. This means that if you
solict a QSO (ie: with CQ or QRZ), after completing the QSO, you must
QSY at least 1 kHz before calling another station, or 5 kHz before
solicting another QSO.
Both callsigns must be sent during the exchange. Only one signal at a
time please and all QSOs are to take place on CW. All information
submitted must have been decoded during the contest. The use of post
contest detection or verification techniques or systems is not allowed.
Also, do not make round robin type QSOs. It will be very easy to spot
these with the names floating around. A round robin QSO is one where
you should QSY, but instead hang around to work the station who is
QSOing the station you gave the frequency to.
You may work the same station multiple times provided they are separated
by at least 3 other QSOs in both logs (regardless of band). For example,
if WN4KKN works N6TR, KKN must work at least 3 other stations before he
can work TR again. TR must also work 3 stations before working KKN
again. Changing bands does not eliminate the three QSO requirement.
The three QSOs must not be dupes themselves.
You must not work the same station or stations using any kind of schedule
or system. It is the intent of the dupe rule to make sure we don't run out
of stations to work. It is NOT the intent of this rule for you to change how
you would operate the contest if dupes were not allowed. If, in the log
checkers opinion, you have not lived up to the intent of this rule, your
log will be disqualified!!
Total score is the number of contacts you make. Any QSO found to be
defective in anyway will be removed from both logs (yes, if someone
miscopies your exchange, you won't get credit for the QSO, so QRS a
bit!!).
Please refrain from using vulgar or inappropriate names. If you receive
one of these names, feel free to either edit it or replace it with your
starting name. Make sure to make a note in your log so we know what you did.
Injecting the contest with an inappropriate name (in the log checker's
opinion) will result in a 1000 point penalty per occurrence. Examples of
inappropriate names may be found on MTV and generally start with the
letter "B".
Additional penalties will be assessed to people who work a significant number
of QSOs, but don't turn a log in. They will be given minus one point
for each QSO that we can verify actually occurred.
Logs must be sent in ASCII format via internet to n6tr@cmicro.com within
72 hours of the end of the contest. Figuring out how to send in your
log on the internet is PART OF THE CONTEST. If you need help, we will
try to assist the best we can.
Logs must show the band, time, station worked, number sent, number received,
name received and QTH received for each QSO. Also, please tell me the
name you start the contest with. We will assume the name you send is the
name received on your previous QSO, so you don't have to show that.
Results will be publised on CQ-CONTEST within 2 weeks of the contest. Logs
are checked using the K2MM LogZap software system. All checked logs will
be made available by FTP except for those requested by the submitter to
be kept private. Decisions of the judging committe are final and arbitrary.

INTERNET SQUIRT CONTEST
The third SquINT contest will be held on the 1st of January at 2100Z
for 90 minutes. Suggested frequencies are 14270-14290. Exchange
name, age, QTH (ie: state/province/country) and favorite movie.
There are three categories:
1. Parent-child category: All transmissions must be made with real time
speech from the mouth of your child (sitting in or near your lap).
Whispering in their ear is okay. Logging done by the control operator.
Guest ops are okay.
2. Child operating and doing all the logging.
3. Child at heart operations.
Potty breaks do not count as off time. Add 10 points for each diaper
changed during the contest (up to a maximum of 30 points). The diaper
doesn't have to belong to one of the operators. Pull-ups or Good-nights
do not count.
Final score = Number of minutes spent having fun in front of the radio
with your kid * the number of favorable comments you get from your
spouse about the activity and then add the diaper bonus.
