Hi Mario,
This isn't a good forum for in depth theoretical explainations, but this
touches on an area that does matter, wasting money and time chasing problems
that don't exist. This will be my last post on this subject. 

Misrepresentations cause people to waste money and effort making their
station worse. 
Everyone wants their amps to work well and be clean and reliable. But some of
the data published over the past few years is misleading. Instead of useful
mods and tips that really help, people have been fed a line of self-serving
bunk. I'm speaking directly of the wild parasitic voo doo, and *not* your
comments.

That model is absolutely incorrect. The equivalent representation of a tube
is a time varying resistance in series with diode, NOT a current source.

1.) The tube only conducts when the anode is positive with respect to the
cathode.

2.) The tube conducts, it does not "source" or supply anything. It is only a
time varying resistance controlled by the grid-cathode voltage.

If the incorrect model is used, conclusions reached using that model may also
not be correct.

The 30:1 rating for the FET is for a non-resonant load, not an unloaded high
Q resonant tank. Operation through a broadband transformer and low Q low pass
filter is much different than operation into a Hi-Q resonant load like an
unloaded tank. The unloaded Q of a PA tank can approach or exceed 200, even
when the design loaded Q is only ten.
  
Design books aren't going to explain esoteric operation like incorrect
loading. It's tough enough to describe correct operating parameters.

All this aside, I have facilities to measure PA stages, and an actual SB-220.
With the amplifier in the SSB position on 7 MHz at 1100 watts output I
measured 2.4 kV peak on the tuning cap. When I mistuned the amp by fully
meshing the loading cap and adjusting the tuning cap for maximum voltage I
measured 3.7 kV peak. The supply voltage was ~ 3kV when mistuned. So the p-p
volage was 4.8 kV loaded and 7.4 kV unloaded. This direct and easily
repeatable measurement disagrees with the 2:1 "rule".

Let me ask a simple question. 

1.) You say the peak tank voltage can NEVER exceed the supply voltage, and so
arcs can not come from underloading the tank.  

2.) You now seem to support the "weird science" that an intermittent
parasitic can cause peak voltage that greatly exceeds the supply voltage and
thus create an arc.

If my explaination that mistuning causes arcs because of energy storage is
incorrect because of statement one, how can number two be true? 

It is also alleged that parasitics cause very high currents through the tube
that explodes parts, yet the SATURATED emission current of a 3-500Z with
unlimited positive grid bias is only 2.6 amperes!

I am assuming the ".5" " is one half inch of water column. So a quicky 
homemade manometer from clear plastic tubing would work?

2. All stations involved must be on the earth's surface. 3. QSL cards
are not required if you are certain that the other station considers
the QSO to have been completed. 4. All QSO's must have been worked from
points within a circle of 1000 km radius. 5. There is no starting date
for contacts to be eligible.
A world map showing the 324 fields can be found in "The Radio Amateur's
World (Locator) Atlas", that normally should be available at your natio-
nal amateur radio society.

Subject: Source of Dow-Corning 3140

When I still had my multi-multi station I used Dow-Corning 3140 Silicone
Rubber to seal items like the potentiometers in my rotor control circuits.
We used 3140 where I worked as a thick conformal coat over electronic
modules.  It was resistant to just about everything.  Unlike the Silicone
Rubber caulks, this material "flowed" and was self-leveling.

The "Swiss Navy" provided my original source.  That venue no longer being
available, I'd like to purchase a small can.  Does anyone on the Reflector
know a mail-order supplier of Dow-Corning 3140 Silicone Rubber?

i need to know what the ac output is on a model DTR2000L main power xformer.
also need a 850-160  model tuned circuit.

Hello Jim,

I received my copy of the Mad River FLASH today. I see you have not been
getting the scores I have passed your way so I went through all the contest
records for here this season and typed them up for you. All of them here are
as submitted and all scores were posted to Mad River Contest Club. The total
points from here includes the KT8X operation which took place at this
station. I'll update this list after WPX CW and send it to you. I consider
the contest season to start at CQWW SSB and ends at WPX CW. Some of our
scores were not listed in the FLASH....... It sure has been a fun contest
season so far!

Subject: Pointy tops on Rohn 25

I have a pointy top on my tower (Rohn 25)

Is there any type of thrust bearing I can use with this type top to releive
some of the wieght from the rotor?  Due to some metal stress my quad is down
right now and while waiting for the repair part it would seem to be a good
time to add  a bearing if it is possible.

Hello all and thanks for reading - 

I considering a second tower and would like
to solicit opinions on the US Tower MA series 
tubular towers (or should they really be called
heavy duty mast?). 

I'm looking at this point, but the 70" version
is probably what I would be most interested in.

Anybody have any experience with these things??

Second - I'm thinking - please note the thinking -
about replacing my FT-990 with a FT-1000 series 
radio - my question is simple - is the any advan-
tage to purchasing the MP versus a loaded D model?

Thanks in advance for any advice you may have to
offer.  Please advise direct rather than bother
the cluster with replies.
