As far as the above statement, they DO CLOSE lots of roads including 26
miles of race course and for blocks around the start and finish lines. The
citizens of Boston EMBRACE the marathon and all the excitement and prestige
that it brings to their city. IMHO it was not a very good analogy to use.
Even if it was once a month, at least everyone would know about it and can
plan ahead -- contesters DO!
I agree with your reasoning. I don't hear non-contesters say
"excuse me" when they land on a busy contest frequency.

Since this message is not contest related, I think a better
place to make this type of annoucement would be in a general
purpose amateur radio group, like rec.radio.amateur.misc.
It's clear the CQ-Contest mailing list has lost a bit of its
focus lately. I would like to request that everyone take a

This is another type of message that is inappropriate for CQ-Contest.
There are a varity of ways to get this type of information. WB5VZL
(geoiii@bga.com) keeps a fairly up-to-date contester "white pages"
listing. You can send him mail to inquire about the email address
of a given contester. Also, I believe KM9P has taken this list and
put it on his web page (www.contesting.com, I believe), and you
can query it by name or callsign or address or whatever. Furthermore,
subscribers of cq-contest can send a message to cq-contest-request
that says REVIEW and get a list of subscribers.
My apologies for not getting this information out more regularly, but
I have been meaning to update the FAQ for a while and I have never
gotten around to it. Anyhow, please refrain from posting these sorts
of "does anyone have the email address for..." type messages.
And my apoligies to K7LXC for selecting his posting for my message.
He's just "lucky" I guess. :-) But Steve hasn't been reading
CQ-Contest long enough to know about how to find this info. (Sorry

The GridLoc contest starts tomorrow morning. I have not seen the normal
pre-contest advertising. I did see the rules and a pep talk by the sponsers,
but that is all.
So, do I get up at 5 AM local, feed the horses, drive over to the station
(K7UP's - note: wake him and his wife up, get her madder at me (another
story))in time for a 6 AM local start-of-contest time *OR* do I go meet my
buds (yes I have some) for our 7:24 AM local, impossible to get, wish I was
at the Masters, wish I could putt, drive, chip, get out of the sand, play 18
in 4 hours, and then visit the 19th hole to drink beer TEE time?
Summary, as usual, if interest exists.

I just got my new commercial Rohn book, and guess what? They
make an adapter for regular 45G sections to make them a top
section with thrust bearing! It bolts into place on a std 45G
10' section,comes complete with guy hooks. I suspect they will soon
be adding the same for Rohn 25G. They also make a 90 degree
25G section in case you wanna really scare your neighbors!

One point in this discussion caught my attention.
I have long felt that the ARRL SS needs an additional category. The addition
of "MULTI-OP LOW POWER" would be an interesting and worthy addition. I would
regularly enter my station in this category if it existed. It dosen't, so I
enter m/s QRO....or single op depending on how up to it I feel. HI
I think there are quite a few decent contesting groups that would also enter
this category. Difficult to know for sure isn't it? I suggest a trial period
of two or three years to see if the category captures sufficient interest.
You can be assured that AA8U would enter the m/s low power and we would have
just as much fun with the amp's off as on!
This is just my opinion, I could be wrong,

Sorry to run this up the flagpole again, but it worked so well I thought
inquiring minds would want to know. Many Kenwood 930/940 users advised me to
just go to Radio Shack for replacement S-meter lamps and wire the 12v lamps
in series. Someone (I'm sorry I dumped the message) expanded on this and
advised getting screw-in lamp bases and lamps so as to provide onw with
quicker change-outs (sans soldering) when the lamps go bad again. I did this
today and now I'm enjoying the warm green glow of my S-meter once again.
The part numbers are: 272-358 (lamp bases)
272-1143 (12v screw-in lamps)
Just snip the wires from the existing lamps leaving two of them (wires) long
enough to solder to each lamp base. Then just solder a short wire connecting
the lamp bases together. Total cost was less than $2.50!
Thanks to whoever suggested this and thanks again to Danny. My ON/OFF switch
has been working fine ever since he said to "bounce" my finger of it quickly
at a steep angle.

Greetings to the Contesting Body,
I received many responses... to the question of what was used to
lubricate the tower legs that levitate in a crank-up tower.
Motorcycle drive chain spray lubricant was suggested. I use a foamy
chain spray on the pulleys and apply it twice a year. Another similar
product named "Phil Tenacious" was also mentioned. This approach to the
tower legs doesn't work for me as the lubricant is weathered off rapidly
due to the Pacific storms. Seems like the pulleys are protected better by
the pulley housing. Same argument for WD-40...Its great for penetrating,
but doesn't have staying power.
AA4LR & WA0PUJ mentioned a spray lubricant named LPS. It comes in 5
different "weights". Its used alot on aircraft. NM1Q mentioned a similar
product named "Never-Seize" which is found in auto parts emporiums. In the
past I have used "regular" marine green grease that squishes out of a
basic grease gun and smeared a layer along the articulating surface of each
tower leg after cranking down and tipping over the tower. Labor intensive
and makes for sore fingers..... hence my original post.
There were several inquiries about crank ups in general which I will
try to respond to serially/personally. I had intended to make a short
presentation about cranky contesters crank up catastrophies at Dayton this
May....but family obligations this year preclude a visit..maybe next year.
Tnx to W7ZRC, N4ZR, AI7B, AA4LR, K7LXC, K7FR, WA0PUJ, NM1Q, AE4AP,
AG7M, and K3ZNV among others for their input. The usual disclaimer exists
that I'm not a grease purveyor and stand to make no profit off of any of
the afore mentioned products. Also I profit not from crank up towers,
unless you are silly enough to climb one or have one fall on you while in
my Emergency Departments encatchment's area..... then I have to tend to
your injuries as I operate the local ER.
I did query US Tower brass as to what they suggested as my last tower
that arrived from them had been greased at strategic points on the tower
legs with what looks like the regular automotive grease. They said
conditions varied among QTH's so that the greasing sked would be variable.
They emphasized a 3 year cable/pulley replacement schedule....but thats
another thread.
I intend on obtaining the LPS and Never-Seize sprays and trying them
out. We'll do a little field testing and see how it goes for the next
year. I'll report the results to the assembled then.
