In fact, if you look at the results for last year's ARRL DX contest,
K1ZM won both modes single/assisted and BEAT the top single/non-assisted
station (KM1H/KQ2M op) in both modes as well.
Randy, now that I look closely at the results, YOUR station (K5ZD/1 KM9P
op)
was in second place in SO-assisted ARRL DX SSB 1995 and ALSO BEAT the
number 1 single/unassisted entry. Strange...

The North American QSO Party SSB section will be held this weekend from
1800Z Saturday, August 17 to 0600Z Sunday, August 18. Single ops may
operate 10 of the 12 hours. Complete rules are in the current NCJ and on
the NCJ homepage at www.waterw.com/~ncj/. Those who are both NCJ and
web-impaired may request an e-mail version of the rules from me or from
w9nq@ccis.com. Team registrations must be sent to us PRIOR to the start of
the contest.
We'll look for everyone this weekend -- I hope conditions are better than
they were in the SprINT.

I also use a David Clark headset. My pair, the H10-30, is fairly heavy
(and as one poster noted - they clamp to your head pretty good). I think
a truck could run over them and cause little damage! . There are newer
models which are lighter weight, have fluid-filled ear cushions,
stereo, etc.
One issue: the boom mic needs a DC bias to power the builtin preamp
Aircraft radios, having traditionally supported carbon mics, provide
this. I made a small battery-powered box out of Rat Shak parts to
provide the needed power.

Your "one last quaestion" made my blood run cold with the memory of an
experience I had which could have been disaterous. I "inherited" 40'
of Rohn 25 when I bought my house in Melbourne, Fl (Seems one but
not the most recent owner had been a ham!) I used the tower which
was house bracketed for 5 years with a CushCraft A4 and it survived
several wind storms which the Florida Atlantic coast is famous for.
Anyway upon moving from the house a friend of mine and I proceeded to
take the tower down. This tower had been up for probably 10 years
and was secured to the concrete base via a base mounting plate and
then to the eve of the house at about the 10' level. Upon removing the
last section (ground level) of tower from the base plate we found that
one of the legs was a mere "paper shell" of unblemished galvanizing, the
bottom 1.5" of steel was completely gone! Fortunately for us the house
bracket had been supporting this leg while two of us jerked and pulled
on the upper sections at 40' above the ground. If this hadn't been a house
bracket situation the outcome could have been quite different (or even
happened much earlier inthe towers life).
The morale of the story is that you cant tell a book by looking at its
cover. A tower which is rusty on the outside may be even rustier on
the inside (or less) where you cant see it especially in Florida. The
best advice IMHO would be for you to go buy new tower and after all
whats a few hundred bucks compared to your neck. Depending on where
you live (Tampa area?), there are places which do hot dip galvanizing
but this may cost you almost as much a new tower section.
