Yet another Web-Site

Hi All,
I believe that there must be a physical law that states,
"The amount of memory, disk or ram in a system will
always be exceeded by the amount of material
generated for that system". With that in mind I created
a personal webpage. As you might expect the theme
is DX and contesting with a few other twists. Stop by
the photo album and see if you were caught in the act
at Dayton. I have about a dozen pictures from the
Hamvention. I could use some help with some of the
Hams in the pictures. I know most but not all, so send
me e-mail message if I have someones call wrong or
don't have the person identified. Any comments good or
bad regarding the webpage will be appreciated.

73/Jerry

I'm in the process of upgrading my shack and am doing a little "thinning
out" of equipment, parts, etc. If interested, look at
http://www.ipass.net/~hockaday/

If you don't have a browser and would like an email with my "for sale" list,
drop me a note at hockaday@ipass.net

Message-ID: <1.5.4.16.19960818220350.2ba761e0@atl.mindspring.com>

Does anyone know the format for log submittals in the RSGB IOTA contest?
The rules say non-UK entrants may use log sheets in "local format", whatever
that means. They go on to say "separate log sheets must be used for each
band (but not each mode)." TR Log doesn't print it out that way. Further,
"logs on computer disk are welcomed, in accordance with RSGB format."
Perhaps mine are in the correct format; I have no idea.
Can anyone help me here? And is anyone compiling the results/scores?

Thanks for any help. 73, Steve KR4DL

I would do it this way. No multipliers. The QSO value would be based on your
grid square alpha characters and would increase as you moved away from your
location in a ring around your location. For example:

A station in EM54 works a station in EM09 for a 1 point QSO.

The station in EM54 works a station in DN91 (the next ring of alpha grid
squares out) for a 2 point QSO.

Next the station in EM54 works works a station in EO52 (the 2nd ring out)
for a 3 point QSO.

We may want to experiment with the QSO point values for each of the rings.
Instead of 1, 2, 3, etc points, we may want 1, 3, 5, etc points or 2, 4, 6,
etc points. Take a test log from the east coast, midwest, and west coast for
the same 160M contest and see how their results would compare. Try to use
near identical setups for the comparision.

K6STI:

OK, good reason to limit it. According to MINIPROP, the maximum short-path
QSO length (antipodal) is 20016 km. How about each QSO being worth km/200
points (round the division), with a maximum of 99 and a minimum of 1?

N6TR:

K6STI:

I think it's high time to dump RST. Let people kick the habit and learn to
live without it. If you feel a sync pulse is needed, send the grid square
twice. If the RST sent really represented signal strength, it might be
interesting and useful. I tried this for an hour in the ARRL 160m test a
couple years ago just for sport. It confused people and wasn't worth the
trouble. A boilerplate 5NN is utterly pointless. Ever listen to the
disgruntled OFs bitch and moan on 20m SSB after a contest has disrupted
their daily geriatric reports? They always bring up phony RST exchanges as
definitive evidence that contesters are crazy. Well, they may have one foot
in another world but on this point I think they're right!

OK... N6TR is working on a first draft of the rules.

I would like to hear from anyone who would be interested in doing some work
for the contest. If you are interested, please email me.

We need help with the following:

1. Checking logs. Tree supplies software.
2. Awards: Getting awards together and out in a timely manner. May be 2
jobs. One person gets awards printed, another gets them made out and shipped.
3. Announcements. Someone to coordinate announcements to the magazines &
newsletters.
4. Prizes: Someone to seek donations for prizes.
5. Club liaisons: I would like 1 person from each of the major contesting
clubs to act as a simple point of contact for info regarding the contest.
Basically you read some mail from time to time.

Thanks

Bill

Just consider this a vote in favor of the concept of using grid squares in a
HF contest..

Personally, I'm partial to the idea of simply using 4-character squares as
multipliers. There are enough of them to make things interesting (both for
"geographically challenged" W9/W0 ops and the "geographically advantaged"
W1/W2/W3 types); they make for a challenging but rational exchange; and
since CT already supports grid-square multipliers for VHF contests, coding
software to support such a contest should be relatively easy. Leave QSO
points at a simple one point per QSO, regardless of QTH.

Steve - I visited at ARRL in person and talked to them about this at some
length in 1980. I'm not sure but believe I may have even left an audio tape-
not sure. The other parts of this are to get everyone available to participate
with you at public and non-public meetings. Get the civil defense officials,
Red Cross officials, etc. to be there and write support letters etc. I used an
impressive tornado helpout award plaque presented to a local ham club by the
local
government folks to show that we were the good guys, and wondered (to them)
what we would be if THEY didn't do what was right. We presented a total
unified package
of all the hams being together, including lawyer help and presentations etc.
The
Stanford Research Institute, August 1966 SRI Project No. M-5436 was used also.

One very key point--tell them what you want--the whole banana--not a compromise,
and WRITE up the whole thing for them. Do their work for them!

We wrote it as meeting FAA and FCC rules. (Some CBer's didn't like that.) And
there was no requirements for permits or inspections; they don't inspect the
other things-like trees-so why us? Remind them that they already have the
power to
take care of anything unsafe per the BOCA code, and we all want things safe.
Remind them towers are not permanent structures-they leave when people move.

There was also some concern about guy wires in the front yards. I told them few
hams would do this, but that I didn't know what the big deal was as the power
company had put three of their guy wires in my front yard.

I also explained to them that there was less chance of TVI, etc. with higher
towers.

A key point was that if height were limited then the ham would use a bigger
antenna
to compensate--spending the same amount of money--and this would be worse, not
better, for everyone.

Distances from property lines? Doesn't make sense unless you do it for
everything-
like trees. Don't allow discrimination. Take a firm stand. Don't compromise.
Take it up the ladder in the legal system if necessary. If we don't stand
up for
our rights without discrimination who is?

Realize that this was for a county wide and city wide type of thing-not
subdivisions.

I don't believe in compromises. When I made the joint clubs presentation, I
had all
the answers and all the backing and support. And I used them all! And it
was a TEAM
effort by a large amount of people. And by the way I have all the
credentials you
would ever need and that may have impressed them some.

I hope this is what you wanted. If not I've got all the answers.

Check around headquarters for the old information.

RST keys you mentally for the "good stuff", like the police "10" code.

The CQ contest is not a new contest and I don't consider it a DX contest
regardless of what they call it. I guess I'm having trouble seeing what this
additional contest as proposed will accomplish as compared to any of the
existing ones except for giving the East and West coasts an even bigger edge
than they now have for the DX stations.

The present contests make contacts suitable for WAS awards and identify stations
from a state standpoint to assist participants in that regard.

Apparently, I am the only one struck by the irony of the same lack of care
in composing a message requesting help from the reflector as the lack of
care in parking a car with an antenna on it, causing the request in the
first place.

No offense was intended by my attempt to point that out. My reply was
flippant, disrespectful and ill-advised. I am sorry that the composition of
the original message caused me to not take it seriously as it was meant.
Please do to my message as I should have, in the first place, and hit the
delete key.

I have apologized personally to Alex, WB6AFJ, and do so again publicly. My
guess that English was not his native language was correct, he is fluent in
a number of them. He must have lived in a number of places around the world
and must have a wealth of experience to offer. He certainly has many friends
on this reflector who have filled my in-box in his defense.

Alex, again, I am sorry if I offended you. I empathize with the sick feeling
of wiping out an antenna, I have done it myself, although not with an
expensive HF antenna. I've watched mag-mounts bounce in the rear-view mirror
as they left a series of dings in my car and I've had whips with multiple
kinks in them from garages, parking ramps, etc. Lately, I'd be happy just to
have room to get into my garage!

I hope we can take a step back and laugh ABOUT this. I do not laugh at you
or at your expense. Just a situation we've all been in once.

To all on the reflector, sorry about the bandwidth, lets get back to CONTESTING.

WARNING!
I submitted an IARU-log to contest@arrl.org and didn't get a
reply in two weeks. When sending another mail asking if they had
got it they said there was no log to be found! Since I didn't got
any reply on my mail i suppose that ARRL mail server has problem.
Or maybe the problem was that I first submitted the log in zip-format.
Does anyone know if ARRL are able to receive attachments in
zip-format?

The reason you are having trouble unsubscribing is because you are not
subscribed. Please send me a note explaining what other username or

forwarding your mail to you, and I'll help you try to solve your problem.

Since you know that cq-contest@tgv.com is the wrong place to post this

-
- I've had two KT-34XA's up , one for several years.
-
- 1. You bought the antenna used, and merely reassembled it. I think
maybe
- you should have rebuilt it. Did you check that all the straps were
tight
- and properly installed? Was Penetrox used to assemble it? When I
took
- one of mine down, I measured all contact resistances and found the
- strap at the very end of the tip of the trombone sections to be
- the weak link.
-
- 2. I had 7 out of 40 blue capacitor caps cracked. I called KLM and
- talked to Bruce. They have no web page as yet. He said the cracking
- was caused by only 3 things: installation with hammer, use of
solvents/oils,
- or bad lot of plastic. He sent me replacement set free.
-
- 3. As for capacitor tubes, only change I know of was going from
ones with
- little drain holes in them to ones without. This, and changes in
tube
- cap plastic material from green to blue, necessitated measurement
- changes.
-
- 4. Does SWR change as you rotate? I have found antenna to be
sensitive to
- nearby objects, i.e. 27' guy wire sections. If so, SWR will change
- as you rotate. Also, antenna may just be shifted low in frequency
because
- of close proximity (4 meters) to roof, which may look like ground.
-
- In return, I'd be very interested in any info you get, and also the
- article you refer to.

- Hi Werner,
-
- The easiest way to troubleshoot a KT-34 or XA is to take
- a DC ohmmeter and measure the resistance between the
- 15 meter capacitor can to the 10 meter capacitor can on
- each element half. This one measurement tests _every_ joint
- in the entire trap assembly. You should see about 0.5 ohm
- if all of the connections are clean and tight (after
- subtracting the resistance of the ohmmeter leads).
-
- There should be no need to vary from the recommended
- factory settings, unless the antenna is coupling to

DOUBLE

- And the phasing straps and driven element must be connected

magazine, the CQ-DL. It may be comparable to the CQ-Magazine or
others,
too.

DL1BU has testet lots of antennas and HF- or VHF- equipement and
published all those in that magazine. In 1980, Issue 10, there is a
very
long test of the KT-34X and the KT-34XA, about 11 pages, and all in
German.

This article does not compares the KT34 to other tribanders, but it
shows
how this antenna works, how loading is done, and somewhat more...

And this article is full of smith charts and SWR diagrams showing a
false SWR because he had trouble with the capatitor tubes and got the
right ones just some weeks before the cq-dl 10/1980 should leave
printing, so he has not been able to repeat all measurements in that
time. But he wrote, the antenna did work well, just as he build it up
with the right capacitor tubes.

......................................................................

The element alignment:
----------------------
I just build the antenna like the previous owner of it. He signed
every
element like that: "direct. l", "direct. r", "refl. l", "refl. r",
and so
on. So I'm very sure that I've the build the antenna the same way HE
did.

I was wondering why the elements looked somewhat strange to me, some
of
the "traps" seemed to look forward, some backward, so I took the
manual
and have seen, that this IS wanted by KLM, so I put the elements
together the way it is shown in the manual.

......................................................................

Capacitor Caps:
---------------
mine are blue and all seemed to be intact, but I did not control
everything exactly.

......................................................................

DC-Ohm meter:
-------------

This might be a very good Idea. Thanks.

Plans for the Future:
---------------------

Our roof is about ten meter long and at one end (about 1.5m) the mast
for the KT-34A is mounted. at the very other end, maybe 8m away,
there's
a second mast holding VHF equipement.

So moving the KT34 or moving other objects (the house... hi) is not
possible.

                   !
                   ! 4m
                   !
      B) !
                /\ ! <-- about 12..15m above ground

            / ! \
          / ! \
        / ! 2m \
      / ! \
     ------------------------
   / \

I think, I will take the KT34 down at roof level (B) and measure the
VSWR again and compare it to (A). Then I will measure all distances
(elements at the boom and trap distances) and compare those to the
mounting manual. After that I will know more and decide what to do.

Thanks all for Your help and don't expect a success mail to early,
I do not know, when I will have the time to do all this. But mast
climbing is a nice hobby, too. Ever tried ?? ;-)

Best regards.
