The father of this technique is Dave Leeson, W6QHS, and it is discussed
in his excellent book, "Physical Design of Yagi Antennas". The technique is
called "torque compensation" and is well covered in chapter 6 of his book.
You basically add a dummy element of PVC to balance the wind load.

BTW, a better place to ask a question like this is TowerTalk, the tower
and HF antenna reflector. Send a message to towertalk-request@akorn.net with
subscribe in the message and you'll get signed up. Lots of interesting
questions and answers available there.

Subject: Placing Tower Anchors in Sandy Soil
Message-ID: <199611221440.JAA30095@lucius.ultra.net>

A True story - many years ago, a professional (CATV?) tower fell over .

The guy anchors were in sand. The sand became saturated with
water, the concrete literally floated, and with high winds, the
concrete guy anchor moved enough for the tower to fall.

I don't have the details, but the above alledgedly happened.

On the other hand, there are a fair number of broadcast towers
on sand near ocean so there must be a solution.

Actually the technique for boom compensation has been around for many years
before Leeson published his book (look at some of the old Hy-Gain Mil log
periodics). Dave did a piece on compensating for the assymetry of the elements
on the boom as you are referencing, but that is generally considered (by
him, even)
to be incorrect in view of the cross flow principle. The most important
technique is to compensate for the boom assymetry as I discussed, or to
mount the boom in the
middle and do a weight balance compensation.

CAll HRS SCORE QSO'S PTS ZONES DX

PLEASE NO ATTACHMENTS!!!! THEY WILL NOT BE POSTED.

DO NOT SEND SCORES TO THIS REFLECTOR!! Either to me direct or the 3830
reflector.

Please in the subject line put your call and contest you are submitting
for. Remember I am doing several contests at one time. Example:

Also PLEASE make sure YOUR COMPLETE CLASS is on them!!!!!!!! If I get just
Single Op it will go in Unassisted Class. Do not assume I know who you are.

Wish everyone luck this weekend!!!

The calls were put by there old call and in that call area. Also you will
notice a number next to the old call. That is the number of the choice
they receieved. The calls are in the order they were receieved by me.

Also Scott, KA9FOX has all the vanity call info on his home page with a
complete listing if anyone is interested.

I am sorry if this format laps some of the email addresses around. They
are just to long to get all on one line. I did put the new email addresses
people gave me on here so if the mail bounces you will know why.

This also happened recently at WETC 540, an AM broadcast station near
Raleigh NC. Hurricane Fran brought much rain...days of it...then the winds
came. One of the HUGE concrete anchor points floated to the top, and one of
the 400 ft (!!) towers that was part of a 4 el driven array fell over.
Trashed it.

Incedentally, this is the secone time this happened..it happened back in the
80's to one of the other towers. This isn't sandy soil, but it is near a marsh.

This is probably tower-talk stuff, but many contesters have big wet towers
too. I find this an interesting concept - Huge solid blocks of concrete
rising to the surface, and floating in wet sand.

Two thoughts come to mind:

a) Could Uncle Luigi have been wrong all there years - He should have made
his boots from sand and not cement?

b) Rather than have the police drag the rivers for Jimmy Hoffa, they should
have poured sand in the water, and he would have floated to the top. As a
logical progression, doing this under windy conditions would have caused him
to fall down after he had floated to the top.

Talk about gullible amateurs.

I will QRV on this CW weekend with the callsign "6Y6A".
This is to avoid any confusion expected by using 6Y5XX which was once declared
as a pirate.
6Y5XX was not really a pirate. It was of course a totally legal operation.
But I will not use the 6Y5XX again .

QSL Route is the same as before.

I normally wouldn't carry on a thread like this here, but I received so
many responses to my last posting that I thought it appropriate.

To all who questioned my future, I have called the FCC and they assure me
that when they see the NEW 610-V (electronic) they will question my
intentions and write me to confirm. I was also advised to fax a letter
stopping the new app, which they will cheerily do.

Although this is contrary to all information I have gleaned from a great
many earlier discussions, it does, after all, make sense.

That's the scary part.

Tks to all for your advice.

Subject: 160 and 80 BC images/filters?
Message-ID: <199611221854.SAA44228@mule0.mindspring.com>

Normally I don't listen to 160 and 80 during the day, but I was tracking
down line noise on 160
(its always S6) and noticed images all over 160 and even some on 80. I live
about 4 miles from
WCNN ( 8 towers in a vertical array) and about 14 miles from WSB (stacked
verticals) and both are 50KW . WCNN revised their system about 1 month
ago so now this intermod. At night they (WCNN) beam away from me and it
goes away. Its on all the antennas including the shielded receiving loop
so its not images from my antennas. but real harmonics.

Which commercial filters work best on this junk? I especially need one for
1.8 to 2.0 Mhz because WCNN has always put a spike on 1832 and 1840. I am
looking for a filter that gets rid of BCI altho if it works for MO or FD
intermod that would be a plus. I have an old Drake RP4 but it does not
seem to work (think its 3 to 30Mhz anyway). Please E-mail me and I'll
summarize.

Thanks

Fred, normally I respect comments from your august experience. While
calling "empty" CQs when occupied with another radio might be considered
slightly discourteous, this practice of repeating empty CQs while on a
potty break is downright rude, if not unethical. Other contesters will
waste their valuable time trying to contact you when you are not there.

Certainly, someone with your setup and experience could find another
calling frequency should you happen to lose one over a pit stop.

Of course, there is the 55 gallon drum alternative....

Let's give these flamers something to think about! A contest within a

Well, the 775 is a fine rig, when it's working. Many of my friends have had
to send them back multiple times.

I've tried the Yaesu 1000mp also, and for my money, the Kenwood 870 is by
far the best value.

The SPAC DSP provides an honest 4-6db usable boost in S/N on CW copy.

Why can't the station owner get credit?

KB2R (at K1VR)

Seem to be two examples in the last SS results.

Bob,

you are correct in your assessment... uncle luigi was right...

Saturated soils, and in particular, sandy soils lose their cohesive strength
due to an increase in pore pressure. This is, in the extreme case, a
quickening condition (ergo..quick sand) which results in the concrete being
pulled from the soil due to the tension in the cables, instead of sinking out
of site as it would if not attached to a guy and tower. Concrete, with a
density of approximately 150lbs/cu.ft., will not "float" in a material with a
lesser density (e.g. water at 62 lbs/cu.ft or soil at 100lbs/cu.ft).

Which reminds me of all the ho-hah I've been reading about wind loads on
beams... perhaps another time...

Bob.
