Stopped by the PO box this morning on the way to work. Wow, winter has
really arrived here in Raleigh. The temp was in the teens with wind chill
bringing it down to around 0. The weathermen are saying its going to be this
way through the weekend. Doesn't look like I'll do any last minute antenna
work for the NAQP Phone contest this weekend. When I got to work and looked
at the front page of the local paper, featuring an 82 year old lady with cane
plodding through a 20 foot (!) snowdrift to check her mail in Minnesota, I
felt much better about my situation, but sorry for hers. Anyhow, the latest
NCJ arrived along with a fishing magazine and two fishing supply catalogs.
With QST and CQ Contest having arrived eariler this week, looks like there
will be plenty to read during any dead time of the contest.

Most every sign-up came with a note saying they would go longer if busy.
Frequencies are +/- QRM & typ. may reach as far as 3-4 KHz from posted freq.
CALLING CQ: A suggestion. If we call CQ WAS or WAS QRP de K6.... etc,
we give those not on QRP-L an indication of what we're doing. FSFD type
calling might be too cryptic for all but ourselves. However 'FS' is fine
when busy. Exchange RST, State/Province/Country, and Name. Power level is
nice to know.
ALASKA & HAWAII: Jim-AL7FS is back from Hawaii and will activate ALASKA as
soon as KL7Y's 40M beam repairs are complete. Watch for Jim's postings.
Thanks to him for the HI effort.
KB0ROL is in HAWAII until Jan. 25 and will post his time/freq info to the
group when ready. Best guess is Thursday 0200-0400 UTC on 20M or 40M. More
info soon.

As I recall that 150 watt power level for the NAQP was THE big
reason I traded my IC 765's for 781's some years ago. The
FT1000D or whatever came out about the same time at 200, watts,
and the trend seemed obvious. I believe 150 is the break point
in several other big contests.
I have missed more NAQP's than I make lately, so would abstain
from a vote, but just to give some food for thought...
The conditions last weekend were perhaps the best in quite a few
years of NAQP, and if the YALE science report about the next
50 years being sunspotless, is true, then this might be a poor
time to think about reducing power.
Of course the scientists from Yale could be wrong, but Our President went
to Yale (Last 2 at least for that matter), and they only speak/spoke the
truth, right?

I just received one of these cards recommended on the reflector and it
looks like a beauty, has 4 serial and 3 parallel ports and is made by Sun.
I'm not a computer expert, but I've seen recommendations on setting up the
ports on these multi-port cards that work, and don't produce conflicts.
Would appreciate a repeat of the info as I lost/misplaced the info.

The CQ WW 160 Contests are coming soon. Get your antennas ready and lets
hope conditions are good for both weekends.
Last Minute Announcements:
1. Please keep the Dx Window Open for Intercontinental QSO's. There
should be NO USA/VE to USA/VE or EU to EU contacts between 1830 and 1835Khz!
EU and USA/VE should only answer DX not call CQ. Stay off the edges
especially on SSB.
2. Please do not send any logs via E-mail!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My internet
computer is used 8+ hours a day in my business and I do the log checking
on my lap top or older 386 desk top! I will accept
a diskette with only a summary sheet and dup list to save mailing the entire
paper log. Hand logs are gladly accepted! My plan is to be ready with
an automated computer in 1998..just no time or money this past year to get
the project started.
3. For our West Coast Multi Ops we have two new plaques starting this
set of contests. Jim Wilson N7JW is sponsoring the CW and SSB Zone 3 Multi
Op plaque. Yes this includes everyone in Zone 3 including VE7. Jim and I
expect to see a record number of entries going after the plaques!!!!!!!!
