Mike,

That study was done during the 1971 SSB Sweepstakes out here in Seattle.
The participants were K7VPF (now K7JA) W7EXM (SK K7RA) and yours truly K7JCA.

We were all given measured dosages of ginseng for one day prior to, and
during the
Sweepstakes. Two operators were given placebos, and one the real ginseng
pills.

Also in 1971, Starbucks coffee was just getting going, and in those days
offered a particularly strong FRENCH ROAST grind, the likes of which have
not been seen since.
Inhabitants of the local hippy scene were known to have traded-in their
pipes after sampling a cup of this oh-so-strong-and-hearty brew.

Well after an extremely competitive 24hours of SS racing the scores were
announced and K7VPF was far in front of the rest of the Western WA gang.
EXM was a distant fourth in the section, and JCA barely in the top ten for
the area.

The results of the Ginseng test were announced, and showed VPF and EXM were
fed placebo pills, while JCA had taken the 'real' pills.

The findings were inconclusive.

No one reported that VPF and EXM both lived close to Starbucks first store,
and in fact had split a pound of the potent French Roast on the Saturday
morning before SS, and that JCA relied solely on his pills, and a small
pile of fruit and vegetables.

PS: Ginseng is indeed a great energizer and DOES help do the trick. Ive
spent many
a late-night lowband effort with a small chunk of ginseng root under my
lip. Cant say if was the JA run or the ginseng that kept me going. but it
cant hurt.
