I just read the posting by my good friend Gene, N2AA. This brought back
a memory soon not-forgotten. During the 1982 ARRL CW DX Test I had
been sitting in this hard wooden chair for over 8 hours running stations
on 20 and 15 when I decided to get up and give nature a break. It was
then I noticed I had this dull tingly sensation in my legs and when I
started to walk, one could have sworn I was drinking Old Milwaukee's
Best instead of Pepsi. I figured since the edge of the chair was quite
sharp that I had cut the circulation to my legs. Later that evening
when I ws driving home, the sensation was still there, which alarmed me.
When I came to a traffic light I rubbed my left eye, I wasn't seeing
anything out of my right eye...had to be contest fatigue! When I got
home, I decided to take a shower, I noticed that the right side of my
body felt cold, but the left side felt warm...Wow, I must have overdone
it, was the mindset. The next morning I had lost my eyesight completely
and decided it was time to see a doctor. My eye doctor said he was
pretty sure he knew what was causing this and sent me off to a
neurologist, who confirmed several days later I had Multiple Sclerosis.
About 5 days later, I did regain my eyesight, in the left eye only. The
ARRL DX Contest of 1982 will never be forgotten!!
