This is kind of like how to keep long pieces of rope from getting 
tangled.  What
works for me is never allowing either loose end to get into the coil.  As long
as both ends are kept separate from each other and separate from the coil,
untangling it goes pretty quick.

I don't claim to be any great expert on this and I'm sure there are some 
around.
Any other ideas?
