Since I went to using progressive lens (gradual change between distance
and close), at some point for computer use, my eye doc suggested a cheap
set of progressives where the "distance" or "horizon" setting was
focused at 36" (e.g., the monitor is sharp, the door is not quite
focused, and the guy down the hall is a fuzzy blob).
They were wonderful. I've kept a pair with my most current prescription
ever since, and the next pair I got was with super-light lens and
frames. On weeks I'm working (4-8 hours a day in front of a computer) I
use the computer glasses more than the regulars, and I quit having sore
necks.
I can see the entire monitor in the large "distance" section of the lens
(about the top half) and it gradually goes to focus about 6 or 8 inches
away at the very bottom. It also keeps the keyboard in focus about half
way between mid-lens and bottom-lens.
Of course, they are the cat's meow for contesting, and the eight inch
focus at the bottom is great for working on circuit boards, soldering,
etc.
A lot of people can't seem to tolerate progressives (my wife for one, I
can't stand the lines in bi/trifocals), but if you can and you have to
wear glasses for computer, radio, etc, you might want to give it a try.
