Another category for SO2R will do nothing to ease the burden of those who
feel oppressed by it.
My hunch is that breaking SO2R into a new category will decimate its ranks.
Winners like to rule mountains, not mole hills. And the vast majority of
entries will always be in SO1R, so my guess is that most SO2R ops today will
turn off the second radio tomorrow to remain on the mountain. And still win!
There seems to be a somewhat naive view of how great an advantage SO2R
represents. It does represent an advantage for those who have really, really
practised. But there continue to be contest winners who DON'T SO2R. Not
every station in the Top 10 is an SO2R station and not every SO2R station
ends up in Top 10, which suggests to me that there's much, much more to
being a winning op than having a second radio.
If that's true, then the inverse must also be true: there is much, much more
to NOT being a winning op than NOT running SO2R.
Those who can, do and those who can't, complain about those who can. But
more importantly, those who can... blame nobody but themselves when they
don't.
If you feel you're at a disadvantage because of SO2R, relax. You're not.
You're at a disadvantage for a number of much more important reasons than
that.
