Good question.
If a caller is off frequency, the first decision is whether or not he
is calling me or someone else. On cw or rtty, I send a question mark, to
have him send his call again, even if I copied it correctly the first
time.
If he responds to my question mark, chances are, he's calling me. On
ssb it's easier to work it out. I'll usually tell someone that they have
their rit turned on. I've been playing with rtty lately, and with the the
mark and space separated by 170 hz, I'm amazed at how many people call
up to 150 hz off frequency.
