Randy,

While I really like my FT-847 as it is, as you say, a good all around
radio, I would be hesistant to recommend it for serious contesting. I
used mine during the CQ 160 CW contest and it suffered greatly
from filter blow-by and IMD problems even with an INRAD 400 Hz
crystal filter installed. If you look at the IMD numbers in the ARRL
test report, they are not terribly good.
