I also encountered the surface wave radar here in Sydney near the start
of the contest between 7040~7090, and just kept calling CQ over it..
around 10minutes later it was off.. The old Russian woodpecker (years
ago) behaved in the same way... it was possible to QRM it and annoy the
operators enough so they'd vacate.. There also seems to be a related
source peaking on 6995 (6950~7040ish) too - and that can be very strong
at times. The other observation was that some shortwave broadcasters
changed their on/off schedule patterns for the IARU weekend too..
opening up (to hams) a couple of neat US Phone segments ie 7240 & 7215..
