I mourn the loss of Phil almost as much as the loss of my father (last
year). We were not close friends in anything but contesting. His wit,
intellect, and persistence toward excellence (in life and on the air) made
him stand out in our contesting fraternity.
I first met him (QSO) as KN9ELT in a late 50's Novice Round-up, followed by
many QSOs from his home station and at W9YT,. Some were
multi-ops., instigated by W9SZR (K3ZO), K9ZMS (K6NA), and K9LBQ (does
anyone know how to get word to Judd about Phil's passing?)
First met Phil in person at a Fresno DX Conv. in the very early 1970's. I
last saw him at his Ruidoso home about three years ago, when I was visiting
family in NM. We had a fine time talking contesting and early jazz, which
he had a passing interest in, and drinking fine wine.
For me, it will always be an honor to have known Phil Goetz. Cheers, N6ZZ
