Wireless doesn't work? Have you tried a "real" wireless access point?

I struggled with 4 different wireless devices (3Com, Belkin, LinkSys
D-Link) in my 4000 sq ft ranch style home, with all AP's centrally
located in my house. I just couldn't get a signal everywhere. I tried
moving them to multiple locations. Nothing worked.

I recommend Cisco Aironet 1240AG Series Access Point. It's not like this
stuff you buy from Walmart, Circuit City and other places. It works. I
think now, it's the model 1242AG. Here's a link.

After I finally decided to spring for the expensive stuff and switched
to Cisco Aironet, I not only have a strong signal everywhere in my
house, I can actually walk my entire 3 acres with my Cisco 7921G WiFi
phone, I can use my laptops with built in WiFi at my pool, my tower and
even my neighbors house and it is THE MOST secure network in my town.

Aironet delivers a strong signal on both bands 802.11A and 802.11G,
comes with diversity reception antennas and can even use external
antennas (which I have found unnecessary so far). It is a bit cumbersome
to set up. It's not user friendly like these other systems, but I am
more than willing to walk you through it if you buy one.

For really hard to reach spots, you can use two or more together. The
Aironet provides the following radio configurations for up to 54M/b sec
at 20 dBm CCK and OFDM 802.11G power levels and 17 dBm 802.11A power
levels with Dynamic Frequency Selection for finding least congested
channels.

Access Point
Repeater
Root Bridge
Non Root Bridge
Workgroup Bridge
Universal Workgroup Bridge
Scanner

I am not joking when I tell you this is a professional Wireless AP that
really works. You just have to get around the fact you have to spend
$600+ to have it.

I need to expand the network (vertically to the main and second floor)
in my old, plaster-and-lathing house. I can't run Ethernet... too much
destruction would need to take place, and wireless simply doesn't work.

All that's left is HomePlug. The ARRL says it's (relatively)
interference-free. No one has talked about performance, so I'm asking of

you have experience with this technology and what it has been.

Thanks,
