Personally, I find an FT897 with 250 hz CW filter and a very lightweight
manual tuner and extreamly lightweight and cost effective package.
Worked over 6000 QSOs from Spratly last year using it with pile-ups
pretty much as big as they get at times and had no problem.  Sure its
not the "top of the line", but for the price of less than a grand total,
its one heck of value for that purpose.  Great audio on transmit and
receive.  Sounds just like an FT1000MP but in a very small package.
