In Ed's defense, I will just state a couple of facts.

On CW, on average, there are approximately 150-200 "slots" that are
potentially available where you might call CQ and be productive.  More on
some bands, less on others.  On SSB there are less than a third as many on
some bands.

How many logs are typically received in the major contests?

While the very nature of the amateur spirit is to be polite and not to
intentionally trounce on anyone or steal "someone's frequency" the fact is
that you have perhaps ten thousand participants.  How many want to call CQ
at any given time - 1000, 2500, 5000?  How many stations who want to call
CQ can also be heard well by more stations that there are possible slots?

The only thing I know for sure is that were it not for directional antennas
it would REALLY be a mess.
