As another WPX contest is upon us I have to wonder what the rationale is
for giving bonus points for 40 meter contacts. WPX originated as an SSB
only contest many years ago and perhaps it made sense to encourage more 40
meter activity then but certainly is not necessary today. All it does is
give those with better propagation to Europe on that band an advantage over
the rest of us. It also discourages operation on 80 and 160 (why waste time
there when there is more activity and propagation on 40 and points are the
same). The advantage for certain areas gets even greater in the CW contest
when longer daylight hours mean less propagation for those of us farther
from Europe.. and when we do get propagation it is in the wee hours in
Europe when there is less activity. I can see the rationale for a bonus for
80 and 160 meter contacts even if it does favor some but why 40?
