The first time I applied for one (for a club) I did read part 97 about ID
requirements but it seemed rather ambiguous. The FCC fact sheet doesn't
seem to say which callsign should be used:

But this part of the FCC fact sheet seems to me to indicate that the FCC is
more interested in knowing who is transmitting and from where, so this
seems to me like the operator callsign:

The special event station must also transmit its assigned call sign at
least once per hour during such operation."

One can look up who is the trustee of the callsign but one can't look up
who is the operator and station currently using it, I.e. the source of the
transmission.
