Has anyone asked the Winter FD sponsors to explain their position? That would
seem simpler than all this random discussion.
FT8 v2.0.0 doesn't support Winter FD exchanges (e.g., 1O EMA). Nor do any
previous versions.
Free text can be used but it isn't convenient. I tried it in last summer's
ARRL FD and gave up after only five FT8 contacts (out of 334 QSOs). It wasn't
worth the effort.

Do we know that the sponsors of Winter field day are part of the anti-FT8
contingent? If not, then I see no reason to boycott them. Perhaps they have a
very valid reason (or reasons) for not supporting FT8.
As an occasional user of FT8 (not a fan, but I agree with Ria that there are
those that benefit greatly from it), I can see several reasons why they choose
to not support FT8. But in general, I'm inclined to give people the benefit of
the doubt. Boycotting an activity that is good for amateur radio is not the
answer.

In that case I think I'll stick to summer field day, then. There is a
vocal anti-FT8 contingent. I choose to boycott them if they are
hostile to a mode that for some has meant the difference between
making contacts and simply packing up and finding another hobby.
