Yes a low dipole will work.
I cut the shunt feed wire on my tower while trimming vines off the
tower. I haven’t fixed it yet and I didn’t want to climb my tower
in the cold and snow. I wanted to operate Stew Perry. So, I put up a
160m dipole with the center up about 20 feet in a tree and most of the
rest up about 15 feet. I can’t say that it was great but it did
work. I am located in the upper middle of NY. I worked stations as far
west as IL (500 miles), as far south as GA (600 miles), and east to ME
(500 miles). No DX, no west coast worked.
I had 102 QSOs between 2200Z and 0400Z of part time operating. I was
running 100W. My 160m dipole is a straight run NE to SW, not that
orientation matters. I am going to leave it up for a while and compare
it to my shunt fed 80ft tower when I get the shunt feed fixed. I might
make it a 80/160 dipole and put it up on the tower.
I guess that was 2 countries and 3 zones (2, 4, 5). 73 Scott W2LC
